I know that frog season is here and I am having trouble on hookups. I missed 2 good blowups yesterday walking the frog across pads. I even waited a second to make sure they eat it. But when I go to set the hook, they spit it. This happens quite a bit so I figure it is user error and need some tips on frogging.

1. Wait until you feel the fish. 2. Are you setting the hook sideways or straight up?

A lot of people use a rod that takes the frog away from the fish, IMO.
That and they set the hook way too quickly.

That's just the nature of the frog.....IMO
Some days you land the majority and other days you can't get a hook in them...

First off I don’t consider myself to be a great frog fisherman, but I used to have the same issue and this is what has worked for me.
it’s important to realize that you will miss fish on a frog, that’s just the nature of it. When I would get a blow up I started to keep the rod down as if I were still working the frog so I can feel the fish, then set the hook straight up. That serves a couple of purposes in my mind 1) you can wait to feel the fish 2) if he missed it your ready to keep working the frog in case it comes back for it. Now there’s days where the first two bites I get choke it. If that’s the case then I might set the hook a lot quicker throughout that particular day. Minimum of 50 pound braid for me even in more sparse cover.

From what I’ve read, heavy fast and minimum 50lb is what you want. I’m just getting started in frogs though.

It takes patience & control not to immediately set the hook, wait for the fish to pull (swim away) and then let him have it, set it so hard it may yank him out of the water. If you miss, immediately throw back in with a creature or crawfish. My luck has been that 60-65% of the time they will come after it. I use the Stanley ToP Toad Hollow Body Frog in Black only (seems to me it casts a darker shadow), you have to make sure to buy the Stanley Double Take Hooks as the frogs do not come with hooks. I love em and am an avid frog fisherman. Just my

50-65lb braid, a rod with good backbone but a good amount of tip, when you see the bite count to three and set the hook hard and straight up.

Bend hooks out a little, and count to two after a blow up before setting the hook

From what I’ve read, heavy fast and minimum 50lb is what you want. I’m just getting started in frogs though. I prefer Med. Heavy Fast and use 15 lb. McCoys Mean Green. Love that line! I always re-tie after every fish caught on a frog.
