thought it was a rat snake when I first spotted it, only got to see about 8" of head and body. got a shovel and went back and it let me know in short order it had a pr. of fangs and was not happy I had seen it.

looked exactly like this one, another cottonmouth just off the back porch.

Hop,

If you have snakes in that pond .... you Really need to get the LMB population going.

They keep the baby snake population in check.

I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us.

Got to love spring time, and a snake is snake. I almost ran over one while riding my mountain bike the other day. I am certain it was a diamond back based on pattern and color. Also, time to watch those ticks while in the woods.

This is why many non venomous snakes are killed. People cannot properly identify snakes. Big difference between a rat snake and a cottonmouth.
Also, big difference between the first picture and a cottonmouth. People in my neighbor killed a rat snake and posted saying they killed a copperhead.

I am no herpetologist. but, if I can see 8" of the head and body. I would know the difference between a rat snake and cottonmouth. I have never seen a cotton mouth show fangs, they normally are not visible when they
open their mouth to warn people.

I saw it from about 50' the first time and just the head and about 6-7" of body, when one coils and opens up you can see the fangs in the top of the mouth and I was only about 3' away then. it was sunning on the sidewalk around a corner from where I stepped out the front door.

notice the mouth is where you can see the top of it, if pic was better you would see where the fangs rest on the roof of its mouth.

this one was at our fire pit and didn't want anything to do with me, or my 12ga. after killing 29 at the ranch I take no chances.
