I’m about to pay $1,000 for two trees that are twice that size. I’m going to keep about a third of it for firewood.

I'd leave the tree where it is. The way the house leans, it'll go before the tree falls. You may have built over a sinkhole.

why not just try trimming it way back, cut the large branches to aboout 6' from the pic, let it grow out bushier.

I have an almost 4' diameter live oak that the freeze of my lifetime killed. To take it down grind the stump to 6" below ground level and haul off is 5700 $. Makes me sick to lose the tree. Two master arborists looked at and confirmed there is no saving it. I suggest getting more than one estimate and make sure they are bonded and insured. Just my 2 cents. This was the cheapest of three estimates. About a 55-60 ft canopy on it.

Here in East Texas the prices went up and lead times went out every time we had a storm. It is hard to even get a tree service to return a phone call right now. Good luck.
