Old fashion benchmark---triangulation. Using three things like a barn, point and tree to get "close" to your spot.

My first Ranger had two of these and this was back in the mid 80's. These things were "IT" in there day. I used them to find drop offs and would usually find fish.

POWER POLES or SHALLOW WATER ANCHORS That's actually a telescoping push pole they sell today. I have one in the shop. Yep, and that's how your partner kept the boat still while you were bedfishing. The original power pole.

I still have several lowrance 2330's and x16's in my shop. One x16 factory reconditioned still in the box. Good memories.

But you had this cheat sheet! I learned to go in the opposite color of what it recommended before I gave that POS away. back in mid 80's my partner and i were fishing a Hydra Sports tourny on Percy Priest reservoir...we hadn't caught anything in two practice days....my partner had bought one of those color selectors which i thought was a gimmick and still do except for that one time when it worked...he dropped that probe in water and it told us this weird shade of blue was what to fish with....just so happened I had a Balsa B crankbait in that color that I had never caught a fish on....tied it on and we started catching fish....it was only one we had that color so we went to K mart that night, bought some spray paint and painted a couple more Balsa B's that color....we caught decent limit next day with those ugly color baits and finished 7th out of 250 boats ....and I never caught another fish on those crankbaits we painted.....and that color selector never helped us again either....

The anchor and a couple of brush grabbers was all I needed in the ole coleman crawdad! Still have and use a brush grabber. There’s times that I want to be quieter than my spot lock in shallow water.
