That and give flourocarbon line a shot.

Appreciate all the insight.

I keep hearing that Canyon lake is a tough lake but I've been twice and did well both times. Beginners luck perhaps. Where abouts are you fishing?

I fish all over the lake. The hydrilla is usually a good sign for me but on Canyon it seems like It only produces in the far north river channel area.
Can usually catch a few small mouths too but not much size to them. Medina is nearly always a better producer for me both size of fish and quantity.
When they turn on at Medina it is not uncommon to catch 20-30 a day, but that has never happened at Canyon.
Both lakes have made me more comfortable over the years fishing deep. It just seems like baits have to be smaller???

Canโ€™t remember the model, but a 1000 class shimano and 6lb line!

Livescope, ruining a body of water near you!

Never fished Medina. Went out there once to check it out and it seemed like a barren wasteland where I had to pay to launch my kayak. Maybe I'll give it another chance.

At Canyon I do pretty well around the standing timber around ramp 5. Fished around the crappie dock and did well. Never 20-30 though.

Check out the zebco bullet. Can handle tiny 1/16 jig heads and tough enough to handle 10 lb stripers and hybrids.
They are almost $100, but super tough, durable, and smooth.

This Diawa is probably a good closed face reel...but if you compare it to a Pflueger President open face spinning (which is what I use) it's really no comparison. Here are some stats...
Diawa has 1 bearing...the smallest Pflueger has 7. The Diawa weighs 9.3 oz....the President weighs 6.2 oz. The Diawa costs around $75 & the President costs $59 ...just fyi
