Greetings and salutations, Central Texas Fishcatchers!!!
Just inquiring: Do the Steps on the San Gabriel, and Reimers on the Pedernales, have enough water for a white bass run this year? If so, has it started, or have I already missed it?

Will be in Austin 03/18-20th, and hope to hit a run somewhere.

Would welcome general info and if anyone would like to "guide" me on a trip to either or both rivers, HMU! Guide might merit a visit to Southside Market for hot sausage and bbq!

Appreciate any info!!

Good day sir! the Steps definitely have enough water. I was there last Wedbnesday and Thursday Mar 9th & 10th. I caught 18 Wed. (on fly rod) but only 10 Thu. I saw a limit come out of there Wednesday & Thursday just next to me. the water is very clear. it's the clearest I've seen. I caught mainly males. I caught some small females too. it's only gonna get better as the water warms up. This place is just starting to heat up. You should be at a good time when you come to Austin. As you may or may not know... it will be crowded. Bring hip boots or waders for more uncrowded river access away from the more crowded areas. no fee to fish here.

as for Reimers, I have not been there yet this year. however, Lake Travis is low. there will be some water in the Pedernales River at Reimers. How much? I don't know. I am hoping, by walking downstream, there may be some good deeper fishing holes. I'm headed that way next week to find out. there was an $8/truck fee in 2020

You didn't ask, but Lake Somerville's nails creek SP is "going off" - now. Newman bottom & Irwin Bride area are good places, w/big fish. its only about 80 miles from Austin east on hwy 290. there is a $5/person fee here. but no fishing license is needed here.

Hopefully this info will help. I've been on a quest to catch some whites with my fly rod. These are the places I normally would go to near Austin. Good luck to you wherever you go, when you do come to Austin. Safe Travels & tight lines!

Shut up and fish!

Great info, catchnrelease. I haven't been to the steps this year. Last time I was at Reimer's they had changed the fee to $5 per person. I fear the water is too low there for a white bass run. Lovfldx, I agree that the steps are probably your best bet at catching some fish in the Austin area in late March. And there is now a Southside Market in Hutto!

Man Reimers is one fun place to catch whites when the conditions are right. Waders are required for a successful fishing trip there. You have to get over to the other side in the main channel to do good. Now that you have to park up on the cliff and walk down I'm not sure I'll ever go back there. Maybe take my boat up there and wade fish, that would be my best bet.

Just saw on Doppler radar that a tornado went right over the steps area. Might be a mess down on the river right now. Stay safe.

Willis Creek may have a good run come up it. And if the river comes up a little bit, the bite will be on.

Yeah, I'm curious as to how many trees are down and what the area looks like after the storms. The tornado went right over that whole area.

Water is up a little. It is also a little muddy but very fishable. Caught 12 small whites and 1 crappie. I only fished at the bottom of the steps. Maybe 50 yards of bank is all I fished from. A guy with a fly rod was doing well also. But nothing to write home about in my opinion. Fun, yeah. Quality. NO.

Thanks for the report, fishytx. I appreciate it. It's a shorter drive to this place for me, than the Yegua, but it's still a bit of a drive.

The Tornado crosed hw. 95 about half mile north of the steps road. I took some pictures and will try to post them.

Thanks for sharing those photos. Crazy storms for sure. I wonder if there is a lot of damage to the parks around Lake Granger.

I had a doctor appointment today and thought I would hit the steps on my way home. Wow, water looks nice, fish are bitting, but small. Caught 28 in 2-1/2 hours from fishing one spot just below steps. Didn't want a travel back and forth up and down the banks. I might of had 8 keepers out of all those. One was really nice, I'm guessing it was around 14 inches. I was shocked. Lol

Went to Willis this afternoon. Seems like the tornado made landfall on the opposite side of the parking lot. Managed 22 fish, 16 were keepers but majority were barely 10.5-11". Definitely need to go back and learn a new path to my honey hole with all the fallen trees blocking old paths. I got a bit lost on my way out. Luckily a fellow fisherman help me get back to the parking area. Stay safe.

I had a buddy fishing Willis when that storm came through. He had just got to his truck when the twister came through. He was supposed to send me some video, but hasn't yet. Said he went back next day and creek was on 6 foot rise and the walk path was covered with down trees.

Yeah, it was a pretty crazy sight. I saw one houses that was nothing but rubble on CR346. All the fields were covered with debris.

A buddy called to tell me about his trip to Willis a few minutes ago. Caught a fish on every cast and the smallest one was 12 inches. Toldme they were huge fish bitting. He caught over 25 in less than an hour but didn't keep any. Just out fun fishing.

Fished Willis from 8-noon today. Caught 31 but only 16 were keepers. A lot of small fish but it was still fun.

My buddy that fished Willis yesterday went back this morning and had a hard time catching fish and the ones he did catch were much smaller today. Crazy how much things can change in 12 to 24 hours. He did get some nice ones, but the majority were small.

Now for my post. I fished the steps and it started out slow, just a small fish here and there. I wasn't satisfied so I went upstream and still wasn't doing so great. I stood there thinking about it, do I want a get wet and cross the river and go further upstream to fish areas Ive had good luck fishing in the past? I stepped off into the water and it wasn't cold, so I crossed to the other side and man was that a good call. I ended up catching over 40 whites and I found some nice big fat females full of eggs. That was a blast. I really get a big thrill catching these fish in fast moving water. Then my back started bothering me so I had to leave them bitting strong. You got to move around and find them. And when you do, it's worth all your efforts.

Due to the reports I have read I decided to hit Willis creek which I don't prefer to fish but it is half the distance than the Yegua. I decided to go fish the morning with no expectations. Managed to feel the white bass fight one more time and ended up with a total of 18 but only 13 keepers. Got lucky and found two holes where I caught most of the fish. This is my last trip of the season and it has been a good one. One note about fishing Willis creek. Trees are down EVERYWHERE due to the tornado that came through!!. Bring your patience because you will have to fight through limbs and vines to get to most of the banks to fish. Best places are deep poles upstream of fast moving water. Caught all my fish on a white roostertail. Wish good luck to all and hope to see yall out there next white bass season

I wasn't going to fish today, but after doing yard work and having a little energy left. I hit the steps. Arrived around 5 and went home around 8:15pm. Lot of anglers on the river today and that may have something to do with today's catch. Ended the day with 37. Most of these were small like 10 inch fish and some smaller. Did get some nice ones though. The water is awesome, can't figure out why I didn't catch more than I did. My old fishing buddy arrived around 6pm and he caught 18. Fishing fool Arrived about same time as I did, think he caught somewhere around 18. Any how, another fun day catching these whites during the spawn. I love this kind of fishing. I got to do a lot of drifting the jig to the fish today and when doing this you are in some good current which means you get a good hard fight when you do hook up with a fish. Might have to go back tomorrow and do it all over again. Get the fun in while it last.

I went out on Saturday for the morning, caught a single sandy, a single crappie, and a single gasper gou. All within about fifteen feet of each other and fifteen casts. Didn't see anyone else with any keepers. My favorite hole was filled with downed trees, and I talked to a guy yesterday who said he pulled fifty out of that hole, and I have no idea how he got down in there.

If I might offer some advice, don't walk under any precariously dangling trees, particularly if you're out there alone.

In that hole.with the down tree you have to fish it from the other side. Nice little channel that holds fish.

Fished Willis from 8-12. I got a limit and I threw back 14 that were undersized. All fish were caught on a 1/8 black rooster tail with silver blade and a 1/32 white crappie jig. I had to cast upstream with a slow retrieve at all three holes I fished. I had zero bites when casting downstream. I just cleaned them and only two were females. Not sure how much longer they will be in the creek but I can't complain if this was my last trip for the year.

Just left the steps. Another fun day, caught 32 before wife called and said dinner would be ready at 4pm. I'm not real sure how long I was there but I'm guessing 3 hours. Found a arrowhead on the gravel bar next to where I was casting from. Pretty beat up arrowhead, but still a cool thing to find at your feet while fishing. I saw several fish shoot up and grab my jig today. I get a kick out of watching these fish attack that jig. Sight fishing has always been something I've enjoyed, so that was a bonus today.

Ahhhh! We always called that hole "spiderman's point" because I would clamber along that mud-bank to cast around the corner of the bend, which apparently looked like Spiderman from below. Even at the best of times it was super-tricky. I've seriously considered buying rappelling equipment to fish there.

My bad. You guys are posting fishing spots over on Willis and I thought it was about the trees in a hole over there on the river. I have not been to Willis this year because I have issues getting up and down those steep banks. But I use to take a long rope with me and tie it off at the top so I would have something to hold on to when I was ready to climb back up. It's a tough place to fish for older folks that's for sure.
I checked my rain gage and we received 3/4 of an inch of rain. I live east of Willis and the steps, so the rain we received would not tell me much about conditions at the river. I need to drive over to the river to see how this rain has affected the fishing conditions if any at all.

Well I wasn't sure if I was going today or not, but decided to go give it a try. It started out slow and I really thought it would have picked up further upstream so I kept going. Got into my honey holes and that spot was dead. On my way back out of there about to call it quits, I found some decent fish. Ended my day with 22 whites.
But the best part of this trip was running into hookline&sinker, better known as Ben. We fished together and talked and had a good time. Nothing like running into an old fishing buddy.
I might get back out there a few more times before calling it a year. There are some fish still to be caught, but you have to hit it at the right time.

I went back this morning, I say morning but[s][/s] it was around 11am. Anyhow, earlier than what I've been arriving. Today was much better than yesterday, caught 51 whites. Out of those I might of had a dozen under size fish, and the others were barely over ten inches. I might of had six around twelve inches, but I really can't remember. Lot of smaller fish, but still a blast to catch on 4lb. test line spooled on a ultralight spinning reel.

So crazy how things change in 24 hours. I arrived at the river around 2pm. Could not buy a bite. Went upstream to my favorite hole and caught a few. Long story short, fished hard for four hours and caught 16 or 18 small whites. It was a disaster today.
The best part on this trip was meeting up with average Joe and fishing with him. I talked his ears off. Tried to teach him things as we bounced around from spot to spot. So I had fun just running my mouth all day. I just wish there had been a better bite. The bite did seem to be picking up as we were leaving, but here again, small fish. It's that time of the year for this spawn to come to an end and it's almost there. Will I return tomorrow? Maybe not after today's catch.

Thanks for the fishing report! I think I need to invest more time into finding the good fishing spots.

I always use the USGS flow gauge to check on the Willis Creek conditions:
https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/08105505/#parameterCode=00060&period=P30D
I usually have better luck right after a heavy flow.

Willis creek comes up fast after a rain and the fish swim up it. You have to catch this creek right at that good time when the water level is going back down, which is only a day or two after a good rain. But man is it worth it. You can limit out in no time at all. And when all you catch at the steps are small fish, after Willis floods and drops back to somewhat normal, the fish that do swim up it are big.

So I thought I would give the steps a shot today. I fished for 1-1/2 hours pretty dang hard and ended up with 13 whites and one three foot needle nose gar. I still had some decent energy left in me, so I decided to go hunt for some arrowheads and I walked a field for two hours and found these. And I took a picture of everything I picked up today. Guessing will need at least a 10'-20' rise in Lake Travis, to have any chance of a run at Reimer's this year...
But "The Steps" are looking much more promising,
hopefully in 2 or 3 weeks, or as soon as it warms up a bit,
the Females will start there way up to the Steps thumb
These are some pics, from "The Steps" from the Friday before last wink fish

Granger lake is currently slightly above pool, meaing there is more than enough water and flow for a run

Ran all the way up past the steps from Taylor park yesterday. Lake is slightly over pool, river access was easy if you know how to avoid the stumps. Water clarity was good. Fished for a few hours in the afternoon, no bites on live minnows. Picked up a few legal size males on some inline spinners, underspins, and rattle trap. Saw a few other catches. Looked to be mostly all small males.

Thanks for info and report@Boudreaux I may go Wednesday, but just go work all upstream from the steps...There were some deeper holes there last year, closer to the 95 bridge...Not sure if still there, but only 1 way to find out wink fish And got some new/used wading boots to test out, with my 30 year old neophrene stocking foot waders popcorn yes

Most of the fish I caught sunday were females. Caught them above the steps, below the bridge. They are there.

I was there Wed. 2-22-23 @ 12:30 - 4. I saw a person with 12-18 fish. He was using river minnows. I also saw a fly fisherman catching. He had 10-15 on a stringer. I also talked with “Johnny Waco”. He caught 3 or 4 fish. He thinks more warm days will get this party started. I caught 0 this day on a fly. I was skunked for the first time in a long time. You bet I will be back! Tight lines!

Shut up and fish!

Thanks for the reports! Interesting all those vehicles parked. Somebody must be catching. Personally, I've never done well at this location. I imagine if you use river minnows or are good with a fly rod your catch rate out there would increase greatly. Curious if anybody does well on conventional gear and artificial baits?

The crystal clear shallow water, lots of fishing pressure and people wading and stirring up the water definitely make the Steps challenging. Fish early and late, use a fly rod and keep moving upstream until you find fish would be my advice. I've always done well there but I put in the time to learn it.

There are people who are successful using spinning rods there. Fishytx has no issue catching them on a 1/32 ounce white marabou jig. Anything heavier or larger than that will make it difficult to catch fish during certain periods of the run.

Finesse fishing is the key in most cases. Softly drifting a bead chain clouser with small twitches.

All good tips, J-Moe. Honestly I've never put in a ton of time out there to learn it, since the Somerville creeks are only a slightly longer drive for me (and much more productive in my opinion). My best and closest option would be Reimer's Ranch, but there's never any water out there unfortunately.

I here you. I love Reimer's because of the scenery and the wide open areas for fly fishing. Catching white bass in those crystal clear waters around the boulders is something that sticks in my memories.

So I made my first fishing trip to the steps today. Caught 8 in about two hours. Very slow bite, but it was better than I was expecting. There were a lot of vehicles parked but I didn't see a lot of anglers. I saw several anglers catching fish all over the river, but it was slow. A guy told me the morning bite was awesome, people were pulling them in right and left. Oh well, I still had a great time.
This will be my fiftieth year to fish for these spawning white bass. Over the years I have caught more than my share, that I do know. There's something about this ultralight tackle fishing that I can't seem to get enough of. Maybe because it doesn't last long and you have to make every trip count.
I had fun and that's all that counts. The bite will only get better as the weather warms up.

Fishing today and the weather is beautiful. The bite how ever is so slow that I might have to call it. Six fish isn't enough to keep my interest alive. Plus my lower back is going out on me. Thought about going to my truck to take a break and maybe coming back down here, But everyone here are struggling to get a bite, live bait, fly rods and spinning rods are all having a slow day.

I met a female angler with a fly rod that told me hook-line-sinker and J-Moe are the two guys who got her interested in fly fishing and tying her own closers. Her name is Sherry. Nice lady and we had some decent conversations about fishing. Also talked to several older anglers about Reimers ranch fishing. Oh how great the good days were.

I tell you you what, I can not figure out what in the heck is going on with these fish this year. After the nice weather we have had last few days one would think the bite would be on. But it's close to being dead. I know it has me baffled. I did see one female on a stringer today, and not that many males. I fished shallow, I fished deep pockets, fished were water flows into deeper water. I fished new areas where there should be an awesome bite, but only a few real small fish would bite. Oh well, so much for trying to analyze what's going on, the bite should pick up soon. The spawn is just getting started, so let's hope a big school of these fish are on their way up the river to spawn. I have yet to catch a limit, but it's coming.

Fishytx, I went yesterday morning to the steps also. I had about 20 spot tails with me, and the whites were just moving through. I would catch one or two and had to wait a little bit for more to move through. The bite even on minnows was worried also. They would just peck at it, and you had to wait a long time before they would take it in. I did have a funny thing happen yesterday, my hook came untied on a white and about 45 minutes later a caught the same fish. Got my hook back and turned him loose because he was only 9 inches. I caught 11 keepers and 5 were females.

Live bait was proven to be the best way to get bit. The minnow anglers had the best success, even with store bought minnows.

Today should be a lot better day for fishing. I always have better luck when it’s cloudy. Yesterday the bite really slowed down once the sun hit the water.

The bite is on today. Caught 40 and went home with 10. Cleaned them and had 8 females. Left them bitting, my back was going out on me so I had to call it. But they were really moving around, saw schools after schools swimming upstream. And there was some spawning action going on as well.

Great news Doug thumb The fishing should really be intense over the next couple weeks. I've been destroying the white bass everywhere I've been but no females. This is the first set of reports for the females showing up. IT'S ON!!!!!

Most of my fish from my last 2 trips to the San Gabe (2/19 & 2/25) Were legal size females full of eggs. I took home 8-10 each trip, of those only 2 or so were males.

Anyone know what the water looks like after the storm yesterday? Planning on running the boat up to the step tomorrow. Going either way, just planning ahead.

Probably head out there in an hour or so. Even if the water is too muddy, I don't mind just getting some air. I don't always get a chance to get out with work and health stuff but always feel blessed when I can.

I will more than likly go out there in about an hour or so. Waiting on wife to return home so I can take a grandkid qith me. We could use some dirty water, as it was, it was to clear. Fish would approach my bait and turn on it instead of grabbing it. But when I saw them doing this, I changed baits and the bite was on. I put on a flea fly jig, different shape and look.

Fished with the professor himself today (fishytx). I ended up with 9 for the day. Fishytx caught around 20 but kept around 10.

The river came up about 4 inches from that rain. Good water flow right now. Water color is a little dingy, just right. Took my great grandson with me and he caught his first fish. He wanted me to take it off his hook, but I told him he needs to learn how to do this on his own as well. So I walked him trough it and he did it by himself. He was so proud of himslef and that was the goal I had in mind. He wants to go back again today, but I woke up with this horrible back ack. So we will see. I might go buy some minnows for him to fish with today, that way he can a few more and really get the fishing fever.
I measured his fish for him and was praying it would be legal. It was barely over ten inches so we were able to put his fish on the stringer. He really is showing a lot of interest in fishing, he even stayed right there with me while I cleaned them, asking all kind of questions, playing with fish eye balls and the guts. Asking about the bones, gills and fins on the fish.
He's 11 years old and he loves the outdoors. Never once complained, all he wanted to do is catch a fish or two. He kept the rod and reel in his hand and made cast after cast. He did return one time to tell me he slipped and fell in the water, but I didn't baby him, I showed him how to read the bank and pick a safe way to enter the warter and then wade to the spot he wants fish. I told him we all had to learn this on our own and all of us have slipped and fell a few times. But you learn from your own mistakes.

Back to fishing. Today there should be a better bite than yesterday. The strike zone will be bigger is all. The water will clear up and the fish can see further, which makes a anglers strike zone larger. Tuesday next week should be a great day, right before another weather change.
I caught 20 yesterday and we took home 10 for the hot oil.

Great story and report, Fishytx. Glad you were able to take your grandson out fishing. Sounds like he had a blast.

Ran up Saturday afternoon by boat, mostly fished downstream of the steps. Lots of fish caught, lots of fish released, lots of fish boxed. Did get a few nice larger fish.

I have a bad fishing report. The water is lower than all get out. The fish have vanished. I have never seen fishing this bad for spawning whites at this time on March. They should be in there doing their thing by the boat loads, but they are not. I fished yesterday afternoon and caught 6 whites, 4 blacks, and 3 perch. We need some rain in the worst way, there is no water flow. Just a trickle. These fish have spawned a little, but so many have yet to do so. The females I cleaned I checked the egg sacks. They are not fully developed so there is no way they have spawned. Out of all the fish I have cleaned, one of the bigger female egg sack was ready to spawn, one, that's it. So why have all the fish left the river? I don't know, this is a first for me. In fifty years I have never seen something like this occur. Rule of thumb is, the best white bass bite occurs in the second and third week of March. I even stayed later yesterday than I normally do so I could watch schools of fish swim upstream in some shallow water like they are supposed to do if they are in there. Well, I did not see one fish swim through there, not a one. And this area is known to be the hot spot as the sun is going down, but no fish showed up at all. I know there are fish staging in deeper water, but I'm not sure what it will take to catch them. Even the fish I caught yesterday were small, not worth the time and effort. You can tell when there is no fish at the steps by the amount of vehicles parked when you arrive. Yesterday there was about a third of vehicles and when I saw this my first thought was no fish. But I walked the river anyway.

A week ago when the moon was in the east skies when the sun was goi g down, fish were in there thick and you could see spawning g action everywhere, so maybe it's over. But I was going by the egg sacks I saw when cleaning fish. They were about half the si,e they would be to spawn and the blood veins were still dark red lines, not spreed out like they should be when the egg sack is ready to release eggs. And their rear-end part will also become a pink color as it enlarges to release eggs and I have yet to see this on these fish. So I'm baffled as to what is going on at this point. You can also push on a females belly and eggs will come out easy when one is ready to release eggs. I have only seen this on one female I caught. And there wasn't that many males up there this year. My stringers of 29 to 15 fish would only reveal 2 males, the rest were females. Normally you would catch mostly males with a few females. This year it has been just the opposite. Crazy stuff going on. But I am that person who tries to read into what and why stuff happens in a specific order so I can learn more about their behavior and read the spswn.

Fished the steps today. Took minnows. Caught 14 white bass and three bluegiills. Only 5 keepers.Glad to have caught what I caught. Most people had no fish. Had 3 females in my bunch even though they were small. Unfortunately this will be my last trip for whirebass fishing. Only have gone twice and caught enough for a fish fry. Really miss fishing my Yegua creejk at Somerville.

Fished yesterday (3/10) Caught about 5, all keepers but I gave them away. Was trying to give the fly rod a try but ended up getting more tangled than fishing. The 5 I caught was on a spinning setup.

Got there around noon today (3/17), hardly any cars. It was cold and windy. Didnt see many other anglers except a few here and there. One guy had around 10 on a stringer. He was leaving and had used minnows and lures.

Water was crystal clear, ended up with 7 for the day. Fished different pockets and one pocket was doing well then it suddenly stopped. Bite seemed to stop for the whole area around 14:00.

Morning bite and minnows seems best. Good luck to anyone heading out, season is almost over.

Big shoutout to fishytx, the professor, for showing me the ropes last year and this year some. I've been dealing with health stuff for around 12 years and finally got some strength to get into fishing around 3 years ago. Still learning but have fun along the way.

GoPro Mobile Fishing Livestream at a local pond fishing the Thief pattern... one I tied at the Dallas Fly Fishers Fly Tying Class at Cabelas earlier this week!

Caught two Bass... one went almost 20 inches in length, other was not so big. Both were fun to catch on the 2wt Fiberglass CGR Fly Rod!

Bass one was caught in the first 5 minutes of the stream. Second in was caught in the last 5 minutes.

Do check the livestream out!

Pace Bend Chevron always has minnows however it is out of the way a bit if you are traveling from Austin. I cannot imagine any whites made it to Reimers this year with the low water levels in the lake.

Yesterday I fished the steps and caught 19 whites. Out of the 19 I had 12 keepers. The water current is very low, water clarity is really clear. The fish are holding in deeper water, but there is still some good numbers up there to fish for and be caught. I was throwing those small crappie jigs as I always do. A guy with a fly rod was doing awesome, he had caught 40 plus keepers. He said he had been there all day though. But this guy is there all the time and he knows where the best bite is at.
Due to there being a few vehicles when I arrived, I wasn't expecting to catch any fish. But I thought what the heck, I'm here, the weather is beautiful, I'll go go down there and cast around in a few spots. On my second cast, I caught a little guy. Then I caught another one. I waded across the river and went upstream to fish a few deep holes and ended the day on a good note. It was another fun day on the river.

I think I know the fly angler that you are talking about. He caught a limit about a month ago when I was there. Good to see you able to get out! Fish on.

The guys name is Robert. He has that fly rod bite down on this river. I can't tell you how many limits he has caught this year, but he's fishes down there almost every day.
Speaking of limits, I am ashamed to admit that I did not catch one limit this year. The best excuse I have is my health limitations. Three hours is about all I can handle while out fishing. But a few trips out catching is better than nothing.

Don't feel bad, fishytx. I caught a total of one white bass this season in one trip. Tough year for sure.
