How big of a yard and how big of a budget? Different brands excel in different product segments
I tried basically all of them before I bought one for my new land with 33 acres that I mow about 10-12 acres on. Ferris is the only way to go if you have a big bumpy yard. I bought a Kubota $20k mower and it spent more time broke down than working. Had a Scag and it ran fine and cut good but was like riding a dump truck across a rock crawling course. The Ferris runs hard, doesn't break down, and rides like a Cadillac.
On my previous 1.5 acre lot, I had a Gravely that I bought new for $3500 in 2012 and sold it in 2021 for $3250. Had the starter solenoid go out twice and that was the only issue in 9 years. Really good unit that had a great cut.
I think Husqvarna also makes a really good unit. Maybe the best value in the new models is the $6500 Kioti with the awesome suspension seat, kawasaki motor, headlights, ZT-3400 transaxles, etc. It's really hard to beat for the $. As usual, JD makes an ok unit but overpriced. Toro's are well-reviewed in their price range but I have no experience with them.

4 acres here with a Scag tiger cat. Great unit. Changed blades and spindles a time or two but itโs been a tank. Bought it used on here 5 years ago and itโs getting up there in hours but great machine. Have ran a bobcat but only a couple of times so not much to compare with but Iโve been happy with the Scag.

Toro or Gravely is probably what I would go with.

We have 2 Scags and a Gravely. The Scag is tough but the Gravely makes a little cleaner cut. Both are great mowers as long as you do routine maintenance. I have about 2000 hours on the older Scag and still runs great

I have a Kubota Kommander Pro Z400 to mow my 1 1/2 acre lot. I've had it for three years and other than oil changes, it has not needed any other repairs. Works real good.

Mowing 33 acres I would have to go with a tractor and a brush hog. I would guess around a 45 hp possibly up to a 2" cutting capacity for saplings. On the other hand, if there are a lot of obstacles/trees then running that becomes tedious at best. Ferris, Gravely or Husky (it has a Kohler Engine). JMO.
Reality. What a concept!

Ive had a Toro Timecutter for 13 years now and in no way am I saying it's the best. It is a budget mower but dang that thing won't stop running. It's like the freaking energizer bunny!

I bought a new Hustler FastTrak 54 last year and IMO it's a pure animal.

Ferris here and mine has been great. I have the Kawasaki motor but make sure you keep air filter clean or the motor won't last.
