Congrats Very Nice Fish.
A HUGE CONGRATS for the RELEASING the fish back where she lives and breeds Totally Awesome. That is how you keep a good lake good keep the giants there and take NO CHANCES with them.
You are a Hero in my book. Are you aware they've been doing genetic testing on these giants being caught lately and many of them are ShareLunker offspring? It's mind boggling to me folks are still in denial about the benefits to our fisheries being driven out of Athens. You gonna argue with a guide that has been on fork forever. Oh wait, I forgot you are an expert. I'm pretty sure the program has got plenty from ivie for this year.

Not to mention the clear results our state is seeing compared to others. I'm sure Mark is a great stick. Doesn't mean he's right about the ShareLunker program being a bust.

Idk about the SAL program, but I do know 100% of that fish's offspring will now go back to the lake because she was caught and released with little stress. SAL can't guarantee 100% stocking rate from that fish, but releasing her back into her environment can.

Not sure where you got the info from but I spoke with the TPW biologist from then 10 from last years group and was told that NONE were SAL babies.
As well as not many of those fish spawned last year at Athens.
My opinion is let nature run its course. GOD KNOWS HOW TO DO IT.

Congratulations are in order for sure...I've been bass fishing for many years and haven't had the pleasure of boating a DD. I, in no way, can fault any angler for this or a SAL.

SAL can't guarantee 100% stocking rate from that fish, but releasing her back into her environment can. And what percentage of those offspring get eaten on the bed? How many survive to adulthood vs the larger fingerlings released by Athens? (I don't know the answer here, but I suspect the latter is much larger).

I actually gained a lot more respect for JonB after watching this. Not many people would’ve released that fish. Really showed he cares more about the lake/resource than himself.
Congrats to him! x2 ×3 x4 well done!

I attended a meeting with the TPW on stockings and survival rate of the fry and the percentage was no greater than 1 percent of the fry would survive through the TPW stocking in fact they mentioned at one point it might be as low as .05 percent.
They do not stock larger fry cause of cost to raise them.
Now think of this, these fry are put into a holding tank with each other. No Parental guidance.
Now we all know each animal or creature God created are taught survival skills, and when to hide when to run if a predator approaches.
With fry being put into a tank with out being taught these skills of survival they know of nothing after being released into a body of water.
They see another fish and think nothing of it until they are swimming a dark highway.
When born in nature they are taught skills of survival from the male guarding them.
