hello all! recently, I found my great-grandad's reel and I wondered where its corresponding rod was... turned out it was all the way in Michigan with my uncles. Thankfully, they were able to ship it over to us (after my fair bit of begging my dad.) Apparently, my GGD had it imported from the Czech Republic. the reel appears to be from the early '90s so the rod Is probably from the same time. also according to my dad, he never once saw my GGD use this combo, and would instead use a cane pole for the native fish of Pakistan it arrived today, and I thought I would share! ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/01/full-113910-126298-screen_shot_2022_01_27_at_2.36.03_pm.png) the entire rig is somewhere around 5 pounds (the reel is 1.8 and the rod is 3.5) so it's quite hefty. The reel is an Olympic ES-5 rod is by Pioneer and doesn't have any specs on it other than "item 1504" which I can't find much on. is 6ft long 2 piece and seems VERY heavy duty. has a very nice wooden handle that seems to be made of cherry wood. 4 guides, all have ceramic inserts. metal reel saddle and rod joints, so I presume this rod won't be messing around whenever I tackle some cats this Saturday. maybe ill try it out on some gar, once the weather warms up as well. I'm sure that this is leagues ahead of the Berkley big game rod I was going to pick up for 20 bucks, so I'm hoping for the best!

Danial,
Just a suggestion... use it once or twice, taking very good care of it, and then put it away. It will have far more sentimental value to you in the future than it does now. Something to share with your kids someday.
I have a rod and reel on the wall at my house that my father who is 80 now, received for his 12th birthday from his dad. We found it while cleaning out my Grandfather's house after he passed away. Had been in a closet for years. An old glass rod and level wind reel. I do not care what it is worth... still have line and hook and bobber on it that my father put on it years ago. I also have a cane flyrod and case of my grandfathers. Neither will ever see water again, but bring back a lot of memories when I look at them.
Cheers,
Ken

Put that thing on the wall and add a few framed photos of Great Grand Dad. The older you get the more you will honor and cherish having a piece of your familyโs fishing history to look at๐

Yep... Couldn't agree more with what the fellas are saying. That is a beautiful piece. I would put it up on a wall in a place of prominence and enjoy it.

Agree with everyone here. Appears to be in great condition for it's age. Put it away or put it on display and pass it to your kids when you grow older.
If you need a rod & reel set up for catfish, I am sure you will get plenty of volunteers that would have no problem donating one. Just ask.

thank you all for the incredibly selfless comments and offers, I truly appreciate it. Though I was looking forward to fishing with the rod, I suppose many of you are right that I shouldn't risk breaking it. I will discuss this with my dad and see what he says. it humbles me greatly that so much of the community is willing to lend a hand, and I hope once I have the means I will be able to do the same. Thank you once again!

I will confirm with my dad today just to make sure he is alright with all of this. Hopefully, I will have a response by the afternoon. Again, I can't say this enough, but I truly appreciate your guys' generosity
