My dad lives in Harlingen and went out last week out of Arroyo city. He was fishing the channel freelining a 10" mullet and reeled in this bad boy. It was 44" long! Only 30 minutes before he caught this one he caught and released a 39" Red from the same spot. The 44 incher he decided to keep and have mounted. He's very proud of it. Been fishing down there for years and never came close to anything that big. Just though I would share the picture. He said he fought it for a little over 30 minutes.

wow that is awesome... i fish out of Arroyo City a couple times a year as well. if i had known those big bad boys were in the channel wanting 10" mullies i would give up drift fishing and start slinging some live baits...

what's the best way to hook a mullet when freelining one? I know of 3 ways: 1. insert hook sideways through the bridge of nose (thru the eyes) 2. thru the mullet's upper lip, with hook point facing up 3. behind dorsal fin, without puncturing air bladder

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

if u whant fish like that go down in late aug or sept try the jetties with live bait thats when the big boys (the red bulls) come in That is the best bet for the big ones and 44 is pretty common during those months. Thing is, you left the best month off, you trying to save all those fish for yourself??? lol October is usually the most productive month for the big ones. ALSO... just because it is a big fish, doesnt make the red a female. There is always a few "know it alls" that say you should release all the big females but those that fish the area often will tell you that half the big ones will be full of milt. I have yet to see a female produce gobs and gobs of white milt...... Keith
