I've heard of folks targeting them never understood why. Gotta ask what's the draw or reason for wanting to target them?

Not sure if there as good as channel cat or not. I only had it once and it was fresh and fried. Definitely on the low end of the scale in terms of salt water fish IMO. I have a rule no one can bring one in my boat. That slime is hard to get off after it dries. The do fight good tho

After you’ve gotten the tribe used to trout and flounder they think gafftop are battery acid.
If you like catching and messing with cleaning please go and catch all you can.

I was fishing surf in padre island last weekend, caught about 8 of these on live croaker and 1 22 inch redfish-all released.

Went down to Riviera this week and fished the Cayo del Grullo branch of Baffin Bay. The gaff top must have had a heck of a spawn because it seems that the bay was full of those little suckers. We were targeting croaker and drum with dead shrimp and must have caught at least 20 baby gafftop in the 5 - 6 inch range. Little bait stealers would have your shrimp just seconds after it hit the water. Never caught that many that little before.

Gato, are you sure you were catching gafftop? Hardheads are normally the culprits in Baffin....I have never caught a gafftop anywhere but in the gulf.

I've caught plenty of gafftop (unfortunately) and only caught them in the bay. No doubt it sounds like he was on hardheads but make no mistake the bays are full of slime balls too.

Whiz: I have fished the coast for years and caught my share of hardheads and gaff top. I have caught the majority in the bays, not the gulf. I know the difference between them and I am absolutely positively sure that those were gaff top.
