Barricade which is prodiamine and dithiopyr are decent against broadleaf protection, but some will get through. Gallery is really good against broadleaf's but it's so expensive and post emergent control against broads is easy and much cheaper to go that way. Your first one id dandelion, not sure on the second. last looks like plantain, maybe. Either way they are all broadleaf's. Go with Spectracide yellow label. You can buy the concentrate and mix your own or get the hose end. It will handle all those weeds for you.

Thank you! I really need to know what that second one is now.

Derek to be serious where do you get the plugger. I probably should get my soil tested with all the issues I have had.

Lol. Those were the responses I was expecting. I use a 12" probe that you hammer in with a rubber mallet and then dump the core out. It works pretty good if you soil isn't too wet. Last year we had a lot more winter rain and my clay soil was getting gummed up in it. This year it worked perfect. Now amazon has the smaller tee handle types, that you push, twist and pull with a side discharge. Had Amazon had those a few years ago I would have gotten it. I cut the top 1" off the core giving me the 2-4/5" core from the soil. I do about 15 cores or so from all over the front. I don't do separate test fror the front and back. I have before and they were so close there is no need for me to have that done. If you think you have big issues between your front and back getting two test isn't a bad idea.

I've got the smaller core sampler and it's a PITA getting the sample out.

A lot of pre-emergent talk lately. A few threads on it. Good to see. Here is the lowdown. The 3 big dogs are Prodiamine, Dithiopyr and Pendimethalin. IMO Prodiamine is the best on the market. Great spectrum of weeds controlled and a very long soil residual. Dithiopyr being second and Pend bringing up the tail end. Trade names are (Prodiamine) Stonewall, Barricade. (Dithiopyr) Dimension, (Pendimethalin) Scotts Halts, Lesco PRE-M. Yes I know Neil Sperry recommends Dimension, Halts and a couple others. And that's fine. I'm not sure why he doesn't recommend Prodiamine. It's newer technology so maybe he's not as familiar with it as he's more old school. I might call in and ask him. Anyway. If you have used those products and like them great. We'll cover it. The above mentioned is more for grassy weeds like crab, and dallis, But they cover broadleafs too. A much better broadleaf is isoxaben aka Gallery. But it's so damn expensive and broads are easy to kill we leave it out of the program/discussion.

Whatever pre emergent you like is fine. Prodiamine being the longest soil residual(longest lasting), Dithiopyr being second and Pend the least. I'm going to keep this simple. As regular DIY, home owners we want to make the least amount of applications as possible(besides fertilizer). Gives us more garage beer time. This I agree with when it comes to pre emergent. Easily to forget about those apps. Specially when Neil says make an app now and another 100 days from then as a kicker. He's right but ain't nobody got time for that.

Check the product you like and what the max per year rate is. It's on the lable. If it's Prodiamine which I will pic. Get the total per year which is 5.05 per 1000. Divide that by 2 and do Feb 15th and Aug 15th. If it's Dith divide it by 3 and do Feb 15th, May 15th, Aug 15. If it's Pend divide by 4. Stay on a yearly religious schedule and you'll like your results.

Yes. There will be weeds that will break the barrier. It's not 100%, but very effective. Stay on it guys.

Thanks Derek, I have plans to aerate my lawn after the thaw and when it is dry enough after getting an inch of rain and snow melt. I already have enough Nitro-Phos Barricade 0.58% left over from last fall to do my spring application. Are you planning on applying it on 2-15 with the cold weather we are experiencing right now?

Yes. Cold weather does not change the effectiveness of it.
