Still catching them in the Timber on Minnows. They are at 12' deep near 922 Bidge and 18' deep near Wolf island. Ended up with 46 for the day.

Is there a ramp close to the 922 bridge? Last time we were on RR, we fished the timber around Buck Creek and could not believe how many gar there were around the trees. Could see the crappie on LS, but they were not interested in anything we threw at them. Maybe the gar had them spooked?

Buck Creek is the only ramp on the East Side that far north.

We do see gar and catfish surfacing all around us at times and never have any issue.

We do also find crappie as well that won't bite. So just keep moving. We will start at day light and fish maybe 20 to 25 trees and pretty much stop by 2:00 pm then go clean em and head back home because we are a 90 minute drive back home. Even when we hit a good tree, we are done and gone in 15 minutes max to the next tree. When they are biting you get hit on the first drop into the tree.

I just read an article this week on factors that will help increase your catch rate (See the ACC Crappie Rod web site, as they discuss this very topic)- be quite, don't be slamming lids on the boat, dropping the rod butt on the boat, even talking loud, will spook them, even waves slapping the boat or the shadow of your boat can spook them so be aware of the direction the sun is casting a shadow and try and come in to the tree so that you are not casting a shadow over them. Get you a 10'-0" rod or longer, keep the boat as far away from the tree that you possibly can and then drop in on them.

Josh Jones will sometimes hit the minnow stunning it before he drops it in the water. The sometimes lively minnow spooks them. Try a jig head tipped with a minnow, try a different colored jig, try a bigger one, a smaller one, add a crappie nibble. But once you figure the depth that they are at you pretty much can eliminate a lot of the guess work. Once you do catch a few out of a tree, the crappie will have a tendency to go deeper, so before you do leave try going deeper. If you have Livescope you will see this happening.

I also believe from day light up until about 10:00 am the fish are on the sunny side of the trees. Then after that they start moving to the shady sides of the tree.

On a windy day they will also be more prevalent on the upwind side of the trees. Kind of like they are sitting there in the current hidden with the tree in the background waiting on the bait to swim by, and they run over and ambush em.

This is interesting as I have heard this several times. I have not seen crappie act spooky or be that sensitive to noise yet. Even in my yak when I would hit trees, they would not move an inch. Maybe it depends on the lake (I have fished several and not noticed). Just yesterday we catching fish out of our shadows in 12 ft of water. They did not care one bit.

I’ve seen days where you can’t scare them off, and I’ve seen days where you can’t keep from scaring them off. I think it just depends on their mood.
