I keep getting a popup about Lenovo BIOS update. I am not really sure what it is about and my laptop is running just fine and my thoughts are if it isn't broke don't fix it. Has anybody seen this and updated or does anyone know what this is all about.?

I have never heard of or seen a Bios update. I would be careful with that one. Try Googling it first.

My company has been providing us with fairly intense and very informative security training for the past few years. Based on what you describe here, no way I click on that, in fact I never click on anything on my work computer then I blame IT for over training me on security smile

I did and it is suggested to update from windows or WinFlash...this info is supposedly on the Lenovo site...I am not real computer savvy so I will probably just ignore the message for now

In a very basic explanation, BIOS is the most basic operations running on a computer. It tells the computer where to look for a boot device like a hard drive, what the date and time is, how much memory it has, etc. It does it's thing before your computer loads the operating system.

A message generated by your computer is different than a popup from an internet browser. My fairly new ASUS laptop has had several BIOS updates. They normally sit in my Notification tray a few days before I let the machine update itself. I one time let a Bios update, Win10 update, and a video adapter update to run back to back to back and it caused me to do a factory restore on the laptop to get things working again. I have noticed lately that it is usually the same day or just a day or 2 after a Win10 update that the new BIOS update will come out.

May you be treated the way you treat other people, today and everyday!

The BIOS is a small amount of computer program that resides on a chip with instructions for the boot device (hard drive,USB drive), video, security (TPM), system clock, etc. This is happening at the hardware level before Windows even starts. As with any computer program, updates are released occasionally to resolve issues or address security concerns. You can enter the BIOS setup by hitting one of the F-keys immediately after powering up. It's different for each manufacturer. Here's a screenshot as an example:

Unless you're having a peculiar problem, most average joes do not have to futz with BIOS or even company IT people for that matter. There's probably a setting to turn off automatic checks and you would be mostly okay with ignoring the updates. If you want to go ahead and update the BIOS and you're concerned about the legitimacy of the popup, you can go to the link provided previously and perform the update manually. For awareness, there is a very remote chance you could brick your system.

If it aint broke don't fix it applies here.

Until and unless you develop an issue that requires whatever that bios update provides you should skip it for now.

If you attempt to flash that bios and loose power or otherwise screw it up, you will have bricked that motherboard.

How would the typical user even know if a problem they're experiencing is BIOS related?

You seem to have an aversion to updates and upgrades in general especially anything Windows related. I've never understood that.

And the "lose power" situation applies to any number of OS, database and application update scenarios. They are ALL prone to hosing up a system if you lose power.
