It doesn't help our planet, it helps our species. It's the single best approach to ensure the human species survives into perpetuity. Nuclear war, global pandemic, asteroid strike, super volcano explosion, physics experiment gone wrong, any one of these could end our species. If we are on two planets our odds go up dramatically. That's Elon's primary goal, ensuring humanity survives in the cosmos. If the universe is teaming with life, maybe our survival isn't all that important in the grand scheme. If life is not common, rare, or maybe we are all there is... it could be the most important goal possible.
