well I was out in the garage the other day moving some stuff around to get to something and while moving my casting net I looked down and there was a snake all wrapped up in the middle of it, at thought it was a rubber snake my dad had planted there cause that is something he would do etc, but nope got to looking at it closer and it was real, barely moving etc

I have always been a huge snake person watching on tv and zoos, snake farms etc but have never handled one or know the texas types to well and everyone I have ever crossed personally was a copperhead in my yard/garage so off their head went. (I have 3 dogs sorry snake lovers)

this one didnt appear to be venomous so I tried to help the little fellow, out but he was so tangled in this casting net it was piercing through his body badly and was already bleeding, obviously I had no clue how long he had been there or if he could survive if I did get him out but thought I would try, I was pretty nervous through the beginning since I have never even touched a snake really lol.

So the process begin and I tried to get some scissors to carefully cut away this brand new net that I have used 1 time so I didnt want to ruin it if all possible, brought it to the front porch because my mom was absolutely freaking out in the gas, she wanted his head off to begin with no matter the type lol but after about 45 minutes I could finally get hime lose, worked my way tail end up cause I didnt want a free head and me trying to cut away his tail, 99% sure he wasnt poisonous but not worth risking it you know, but as I worked my way up he would just kepe crawling and getting more tangled as time went on, I was already late to the ranger game thanks to this fellow so just figured to cut up the net and free him that way, I was getting a little upset it was taking this long at this point lol
But yeah finally got him free after an hour or so and took him off to a wooded lot across from the house.

Think the snake will survive? Anyway to tell? He was pretty active but still as I was cutting close to his head, almost like he knew what I was doing.. I thought it was a pretty cool story but this is my first snake encounter really in 20 years. Sorry this was so long

so what kind was it? plain grass/garter snake?

-chase

looks like a common watersnake, or a rat snake. NO diamond shaped head signifying it was poisonous.

It's a Diamond Back Water Snake. Very common snake & harmless. When they are healthy, they can be aggressive.

That was an African death adder. Relative to the Mamba family. Less than 1/10th of an ounce of venom can wipe out an entire village!

I hear the venom is so poisonous, that merely the stinch of it reeking through the scales is enough to make a grown man feel dizzy.

Luck was on your side...had he been healthy, he'd have taken your arm off for sure!

Great job on saving that water snake. they usually aren't
that nice, but he was prob. pretty dehydrated. total benefit
to the ecology,snakes like that.
