Yes, it was a cotton mouth that bit a Y Magic and I couldn’t shake it off. If I remember right I cut my line at a healthy distance and tied it off to a stump. Went back later with a Taurus Judge but the turtles had done the work for me. I always weigh risk by considering how long I’ll be down if A B or C happens so I decided to do the safe approach and still keep my lure. I was in the hospital once during opening week of deer season and remember what it was like staring out the window wanting to be in the outdoors. You really are blessed if you got your health.

This happened to me several years ago on Marine Creek. My wife and I were fishing and a snake was headed to the boat, took a swing at him with a spinner bait tied on and intended to hit the water to scare him off, accidentally hooked him with the spinner bait. Wife hollered don't let it in the boat! As I was trying to get it loose, and having no luck, as I was digging for my pocket knife to cut the line the snake unhooked himself. Me and the snake were both happy, I got my lure back and he got his freedom..win=win. Plus, the wife was happy the snake stayed in the water.

Many years ago when I lived in Morgan City LA, I was fishing with brother-in-law in Lake Palourde in my Dad’s aluminum bass boat. We heard a commotion about 30 yds ahead of us and I told BiL to troll up that way. It was a water moccasin that was wrapped around a catfish at least 5lb. The snake had bitten in right behind the catfish gill and the cat was rolling as the tend to do. We eased up closer and I took my S&W 357 out of tackle bag and fired a shot off to the side of the two of them. The moccasin let go immediately. His head was about as big as my fist ! I fired a round and hit him center of head. Right after that, moccasins started surfacing all around the boat. I started firing at them and told BiL to crank the big motor and get us the hell out of there !! Never saw anything like that ever before (or after) but I can say it was scary as sh!t !!

Found this hitchhiker when I pulled my boat out this past Saturday on Brady lake. Tried poking it with the handle of my net and it wrapped up around the jackplate and refused to leave.

If it is a non-venomous snake, then you can try and remove the hook. If you don’t know for sure then don’t mess with it. You do not want to mess with a venomous water moccasin, unless you know what you are doing. All water snakes typically have a nasty disposition and will bite you. There have been people die from non-venomous snake bites by having a heart attack. Oh and they hit flies too. Awe he77 no!

can of wasp spray. about 3 yrs. ago I had one crawl on the transom at the 154 bridge on fork, never saw one that looked like it before. looked it up and it was a coral snake, hung out on the transom/jackplate till we hit about 65 and he bailed. snakes don't bother me, I will try to discourage them from the boat if they are headed my way but won't try to catch them or mess with them if I don't have to. trolling motor usually outruns them if need be.

Hop, if that one in the picture is what was on your boat, it wasn't a coral snake. Pretty close but wrong colors. And they're fairly small. Still don't want em on my boat for sure!!

That looks like an eastern kingsnake.

Gonna bet at least half of the "moccasins" in this post were harmless water snakes.
Just grab them behind the head and remove hook.
If terrified of the snake, while its hanging from the lure, grab the hook with a pair of plyers and shake them off. Or call my 13 year old daughter, if she isn't busy, maybe she will unhook it for you...................

I just raise them up and let the trolling motor work on 10. Seems to always work for me.

Had a water snake attack my whopper plopper at Lewisville a couple years ago. That was my last cast with that bait.
