It is very possible to catch a mullet on hook-n-line. And if you do get hold of one they are a hell of a fight!! When I was a kid the big bull mullet use to swim around the boat dock at our condo every morning. We use to tie on a very small hook, like the size of a fly-hook, and bait it with a piece of fishegg from trout or redfish. That always seemed to work the best. I have heard of people eating them, but I always preferred to use them as bait or sell them to guys at the docks for marlin bait.I used to get $5-8 for the big ones.

I'm still going to try and catch the magic mullet on hook and line.
The snagging method doesn't work. I tried it the other day. I lobbed my lure over the top of a large one, pulled it in, and timed it so they would meet, then yanked the [censored] out of the lure, straight at the mullet! It hit, but didn't take. When I looked a the jig, there was a big scale stuck on the hook, lol. I tied it again, this time I seen the scale go flying of, and my jig too. I tried a third time, but it just bounced off.
gmassey, which is smaller, trout or red eggs? Do they float or sink? I have a fly rod, and small hooks - great way to deliver some eggs for sure.

Try white bread (yes like mrs bairds) shallow, under a cork with no weight... I have caught many using this method.

I foul hooked 2 within 20 minutes of each other this sunday. Was throwing a top water with 2 big treble hooks in about 1-2 feet of water. I'd throw it and they seemed to jump right into it.

Why not? People eat specks, redfish, and flounder caught in Galveston everyday. Why would mullet be any different? Aside from the color the water in Galveston is not as bad as some people make it out to be. The color is from the sediment and discharge from the Mississippi and other rivers, right? That's what I have always heard anyway.
