I am done with palm trees in SE Texas. I have lost and replanted so many over the past 11 years. We had 9 before the freeze. The freeze took out 6 of them and I had the other 3 cut down that would probably have survived. I am just starting over and will plant only things native to our area that can withstand the hard freezes. In my area, SW of Houston, I have see growth on some mexican fan palms and canary island date palms. All queens I have seen are toast IMHO.

This kind of aligns with the Bob Davis Theory Regarding Palm Trees. His theory would suggest that all this palm tree carnage is happening because palm trees donโ€™t belong here.

We planted over 60 Texas Sabal palms and all survived the freeze. Florida Sabals did very well too as did Dwarf Palmetto's. They didn't even know it got cold.
The key is knowing what does well in such cold temps. We did our homework and it paid off.

All of the BIG ones in Blockers Camp got murdered, some of them were 25-30 footers.

Mamacita's Mexican restaurant in Kerrville has a bunch around the building and parking lot. They looked like they were trying to green up last weekend.

Mine have no signs of life yet (Mexican Fan Palms), but I've invested 17 years in them, so I'm not giving up yet.

Nobody around here prematurely took them out thinking they were dead. Every single one has put off new growth this week. I thought for sure they were all dead and not one is.

Two of my Madjools survived, two did not. I crop topped one of the dead ones just to see if there was any sign of green. The inside of the palm was all rotten and smelled hot garbage and death. I lost all my citrus. Pretty much everything else survived. Even my birds of paradise. They looked dead as door nails, but once I trimmed away all the dead foliage they sprouted new shoots and are looking great now.

Tiny little mohawks have grown. I think all three are going to make it but definitely not adding a tropical feel to the atmosphere.

For now, I'll agree with Bobby D. wink

I've seen a few, but I know there are different kinds and my guess is some had no chance and none survived while others of a different variety had a chance and some made it.
