Look at blue gills swimming around the edge of a pond, the very end of their tails look like they have been dipped. JJs has some serious garlic, whoa! Dipping gives me confidence!

You hit the nail on the head Mark. Anything you do that you feel more confident your bait is going to catch fish the better you are. And as it being Old School well that's just fine because I am definitely about as Old School as it gets. Just like I have and will always have some Smelly Jelly to add to my soft plastics along with the dye.
I even had a tournament partner that not only dipped the tails of his Zoom Lizards but would take the time to take a toothpick and dot the eyes. He would sit in the motel room forever doing that. He did it and ended up winning the Individual portion of a Federation State Top Six tournament on Sam Rayburn for our club one year out of hundreds of anglers when we won the event. It definitely made me do it for many years until I just got too lazy to take the time.

thats literally where I got my "less is more" thinking. those gills just have a tiny accent at the tips of their tails...and I try and get that subtlety when i dip. been zerod on a GP senko....just to dip the tip of the tail and then get bit the next cast or a few casts later quite a few times. so I definitely think there is a time and place for it

It's a confidence thing for me. Yes, I do most of my plastics but not all of them. My three favorites, speed craw, fluke, and baby brush hog...always.

I was taught years ago by a good fisherman to barely dip the tail. Side note the other day I was on a pretty good fluke bite and was out fishing partner 3 to 1. I thought about it later but I was dipping he wasn't, it wasn't on purpose, I just had it in a safe place where it wouldn't spill got to catching and didn't think about his fluke.

I use the markers on the tails sometimes. The stuff in a bottle is a mess waiting to happen

I switched to the marker pens also. No more spilling.
