If you can grab the round of the hook, squeeze the players tight, and do a downward jerk and pop action. Quick and slightly to the side is often better than trying plyer surgery through their gills. Thanks I appreciate the advice. I will try this.

Your eyes see a bite before your hands feel a bite. Watch for rod flexion that is different than normal with bottom contact or just normal retrieve like a swimbait. A more sensitive rod you would notice a paddle tail stop paddling as well. I will try to find the Tactical Bassin video about it Thanks. I was using a cheap walmart rod since I was out of town and couldn't bring my gear. I appreciate the advice.

This, and if that doesn't work, the gill method will. Really no reason to ever leave a hook in the throat once you learn how to do these methods. Watch Honey Hole, he never goes through the gills on deep hooked fish and always pops the hook out. It gets harder the smaller the fish though. I will look go look at Honey Hole. I've looked at several videos on how to do it so if it does happen again I can make sure to get it out. Thanks for the help.

C-rig is the worst for deep hooking, no matter how sensitive your rod is. Never thrown the c-rig. I'll keep this in mind. Thanks.

Sawyer.. I think that the rod you were using was the problem. Over time, you develop a feel for baits with a specific rod and reel that really help to prevent that. I had that problem when I first started fishing a Senko. I just couldn't feel the fish with the rod I was using. With better equipment and more being more familiar with the feel of a rod you will get a lot better at feeling the fish and setting the hook before the bait gets down into the crushers. Good luck BD

C-rig is the worst for deep hooking, no matter how sensitive your rod is. For sure. It's a fishing deal and I've caught them with the hook coming out their poo hole. They can pass it. Sometimes they die, but it's rare.

C-rig is the worst for deep hooking, no matter how sensitive your rod is. Sad but true, I have gut hooked a few big ones (over 7lbs) the last few weeks and I have noticed that the berkley power baits are more likely to get a gut hook or throat hooked. The bass seem to chomp on them and choke those baits down faster than other baits from what I have seen.

Since I started working on them through the side, it is a rare occasion that I can not roll the hook out of a fishes gullet. It happens, they swallow it some times, that is what corn meal and peanut oil is for!
See you on the lake and have a great day!

Can I ask why you couldnt get it out through the gills? You know how to do it the right way, right? Sorry for asking the stupid question but just wanna make sure. Ive become a bit of a fish surgeon cuz I suck at fishing....but sometimes smallies are hard to get out through the gill, so i get it happens. Just had to ask. I've watched the Tactical Bassin guys make a video on how to do it but this was my first time ever trying the technique and I couldn't pull it off. The fish had a small mouth which didn't help. I've watched it and other videos again so I can make sure I get it out next time. I guarantee youll get better at it the more you do it. I used to be a "power fishermen" but really stepped up my soft plastic and dragging game these last couple years.....and that means more gut hooks. When I first started I honestly didnt even like soft plastics because I was worried about fish care....first times were definitely harder.... but the trick really works once you spin the hook. it almost pops itself out. Now....i literally dont even worry or think twice when they are gut hooked....now i quickly just grab my pliers, lip them well, dip them in the water and give them a quick slosh around so they can get a quick breath......take em out and get through the gill, and out! Not a bad process now and the fish dont even seem to mind. Just pay attention what gill raker you go through to make sure you take the easiest route.....and be delicate....but be definitive when you make your moves. When I started id worry too much and take longer and make things worse...now I just find the opening, get in and out confidentally...and things have been going way better. I dont ned rig anymore cuz Ive lost a few I couldnt get the ned out from....ill still throw it, but the trouble Ive had removing those gut hooks keeps me away from throwing it. those have been the ones I still have trouble with

cut the hook off and let the bass swallow it. Depending what lake you are on it will rust out and pass naturally.

Sometimes your best bet is to give them the hook. I’ve seen rusted hooks coming out the other end.
