Greetings. Just moved to the area and I'm headed to Boerne Lake in the morning to see whats up.

Anyone have any good info? I'll be going for bass and panfish/crappie.

Any specific areas I should focus on?

Any specific bait that works best for these species on this lake?

I appreciate any info given. Im trying to make this trip as successful as possible.

Might be pretty crowded Easter Weekend. Boerne lake does not allow motorized gas motors. You either paddle or use a trolling motor, or bank fish. Plenty of bass in the main lake. Fish the coves and look for drop offs in 10 to 15 feet of water. I have never caught any crappie on Boerne Lake. Caught plenty of nice Bluegill. There are also White Bass on that lake and in the creek channel. I target the Bluegill/Sunfish and use night crawlers on light tackle. Best of luck. The best time to fish Boerne Lake is late spring and in the fall, during a week day. thumb

Never seen crappie there either. Lots of bluegill though.

Thought I read somewhere that they had crappie but I could be mistaken. Bluegill is fine with me. I'm semi-addicted to float fishing so that works. I'll report back when the day is through.

Just some updated general info for posterity. As of 4APR21.

Lake opens at 5am.

$10.00 entry fee on weekdays
$15.00 entry fee on weekends
$20.00 for Easter Sunday (my luck)

The gate attendent doesn't arrive until a few hours after opening and said entry is free before she gets there.

I arrived at 0800 and there were like 300 people already working the BBQ. Only a few boats at the ramp. Not much fishing pressure.

So I parked in the parking lot and headed west towards the creek. About 500 yards up there is a fence with no trespassing signs. Apparently it's private property in that direction. Backtracked and went all the way around the lake trying to get to the creek. Ran into private property on that side too. So apparently there is no access to the creek from the park.

Made my way back around casting at every rock pile, stump, stick up, and drop-off I could see. Somebody even dumped a Christmas tree on the south bank for us. The best area I could see for cover and structure was what looked like an old fence with posts going out into the water. Had a couple of large tires out there as well. Problem was that it was only about 12 inches deep.

The good:

The lake is beautiful, especially when the wind stops blowing. Water visibility is probably 5 or 6 feet minimum. Real pretty turquoise water and sandy beaches. Water sports could be a blast here. There is a pretty nice trail around 75% of the lake. Hiking, running, or just a leisurely stroll is very peaceful here. Some deer and other wildlife roaming around. Pretty big disk golf course. I can't imagine many people fishing here so it's not a very pressured lake. If you were in a boat there may be some offshore structure worth fishing. The rip rap all along the damn is probably worthwhile. The bluffs along the south shore run deep and probably hold fish down there. I can imagine trolling out in the middle being productive. Boat launch isn't congested. Parking is plentiful.

The bad:

As a bank angler, I can't see any reason to fish at this lake. Nearly a waste of time. Structure is sparse and cover few and far between. The highest probability areas for holding fish, that being the feeder creek, is flanked on both sides by private property. The lake is basically a fish bowl with sand beaches and turquoise water surrounding a good portion of it. Only 2 docks, one of which is at the launch ramp and has no fishing signs.

The ugly:

I paid $20 bucks to take a 4 hour hike.

If I missed something please correct me. I was trying to like this place as it's the largest body of water nearest to my house.

It’s a poor fishing lake, even in a boat. I used to fish it a lot, got to the point that it’s a waste of time. More fish in Medina lake. The creek isn’t the best place for fishing, it’s the main body. The creek is full of turtles.

used to be an awesome lake back when, straight out from the ramp (if it is still in the same place) there was a huge hydrilla area, black worms with blue tail or jigncraw in the same colors at night and you could boat 6-7 from 5-8#.
this one came from the mouth of the creek, left side there is a rock outcrop that had a willow on it, spinner dropped and before I even began to reel she hit it. 1990 new years day in the early am.
spinners and rapalas on the dam were good too.
not sure what happened to it but boerne lake was a great fishin hole.

No hydrilla there (Or wasn’t a few years back), there is some skunk grass on the large flat across the lake. It seems like a lot of people keep what they catch out there, not sure if that’s the problem or what. Could just be water that isn’t very fertile, kinda like Medina & Canyon. I have had a few great days out there, but it’s been very few.

Mr. Newton, you mentioned water sports. Just so nobody here misunderstands, you cannot use a gas powered motor on the lake (without permission or an emergency).

Our problem with this area of the state is too many people, and too few places to fish. Going to the coast is your best bet if you want to catch fish, and now after the freeze that may not be all it used to be.

Just one more cast!

Fishing from the bank, I would say probably best bet is to fish that point that is on the North side. That point reaches pretty far out and the creek channel runs right up to the right side if you standing on the bank looking at the dam. So wadding out into the water fishing 12 - 1 O'clock you will be fishing up to 15ft of water that is right next to the creek channel. If I remember right, the creek is about 30 - 35ft deep in that area. The water is clear, so expect grass on the bottom at least 3 - 4ft thick.

I've marked what I thought were some pretty good size catfish on my sonar in the creek channel. But I've never been back to target them.
I keep telling my self that I will someday, but never do.

I like Boerne lake because it's a nice place for being close to San Antonio, but I struggle to find fish. I've never caught more than 2 in a day there and that's with a kayak. Supposedly people catch bluegill fishing off the dam, but I never catch fish there.

Not sure why a fence was across the creek. It is public access all the way up to the road that crosses the creek bed. Usually gets very shallow, but was able to make it up there pretty easy last Spring. Never had a problem catching fish there, but not the biggest. If interested, you can check out my Fledgling YouTube channel as I have a video on there from Boerne lake. LoneStar Renegade tv
