We did the same as some of you, just different. Sold the big bills in Fl ($3000 taxes alone on an 85 ft. water frontage lot) and bought a dilapidated old fish camp/general store for cash in AL ($39 taxes on 450 ft. water frontage & 1/2 acre) on one of the best crappie/bass lakes in the nation (Eufaula). Converted the old store into a cabin, bought a prefab for a drop a shop, built a pole barn & a homemade storage shed the same size for our fishing equipment. Added a porch. All this done over a 3 year period with us doing as much as possible so no payments. It's been worth it in spades. If 10 cars go by in a day it's because there's a fishing tournament somewhere (or rush hour). The backyard: The old store now cabin (that door is the customer's restroom): The neighbor (looks after the place and keeps crime down):

I agree with RayBob and J.P. as we have lived full time at the top of the Hill Country since leaving the Metro and being retired. 3 days without electricity wasnt a big deal but it sure was quiet and dark at night!

I have a friend who has moved back to his family ranch. He once told me he spent the first 20 years of his life trying to figure out how to leave the "boring country life" and the next 20 years trying to figure out how to get back to it. I was born and raised in the country and have not yet figured out how to get back to it.

Nice looking property. Have loved moving out of the city life for close to 7 years now. No plans to ever go back to it. Well, except to get groceries every once in awhile. I have a horse field/property to one side of me, a tree farm on another. Can shoot my guns whenever I want or need to, run a chainsaw or other power equipment without a neighbor complaining or calling the cops. I do need to figure the best way to line/seal the bottom of my pond. It's more of a seasonal pond going dry by the end of most summers so can't stock it with fish, but have plenty of bullfrogs serenading us every night. Of course, one day my wife and I will probably pass away and no one will know for months.
May you be treated the way you treat other people, today and everyday!

moved to the country 28 years ago and am here to stay. As Emit said, I can go out back and shoot to my hearts content, run a chainsaw or tractor equipment as I please with no one to whine about it. Power outage was not an issue here as we were prepared for it. Raised our kids here and they got a great education from a smaller school district.

Here is a look back at our house and shop from our seasonal pond. The pond is anywhere from 8 to 16 feet deep (water level in the photo down about 2 feet from normal full) and only about a third of it is shown in this pic. The tree on the left is on an island in the pond and there is a bridge out to the island. I put in a cross fence so that the wildlife could enjoy the pond area, but not come up to the house/garden.
May you be treated the way you treat other people, today and everyday!

I will move to Wyoming one day. I’ve been doing the city life for 26 years now, and I’m trying to figure out how to get out.
