I only buy Prime 1 at HEB when it comes to Beef. $7.99 a # for Prime Top Sirloin. Produce is good but I liked the produce at Kroger better.

I saw a guy on the news complaining that they weren't building in the south Dallas food desert. If you had to choose between putting a store in Frisco/Plano or south Dallas which would you chose? They are in business to make a profit. Exactly

Temple HEB rocks. 2 in Odessa and 2 in Midland Great stores. Go on Tuesdays and Thursdays to avoid big crowds.

They are in business to make a profit. Exactly I think that the City of Dallas even subsidized two different stores to get them to open there several years ago and they both failed for lack of business.

I've been to only 1 HEB in my life... in Queens, New York.. not very nice and always wondered why so many folks liked them. New York?

Love newer HEB's. I wish they'd just demolish all the older ones. They give the brand a bad name. The one in Marlin is like a set from "The Walking Dead." They (thankfully) shuttered the one in Waco down by Baylor, as well as the one on 19th Street.. Both were tiny, crowded, filthy, ghetto-ridden deathtraps. The newer ones in Waco and Hewitt are clean and well-stocked. They're always crowded but they hire good kids so the lines move quickly. They actually seem over-staffed. I was in there Thursday after work and I think a third of the people in the store were employees. They have their own fleet of shrimp trawlers, they make awesome fresh tortillas and tamales, and if yours has a "Flaming Bird" inside you are indeed fortunate. Very good chicken for not a lot of money. At least the one I go to, you can take any piece of meat to the butcher shop and have it cut to your liking at no extra cost. I frequently have prime rib roasts cut into steaks, or a big brisket separated point from flat and trimmed. I get a 7-rib prime roast from them every Christmas and just for the asking they'll separate the ribs from the roast, flip them over, and tie them back together for me. Pretty sure most do this, though. Not sure. All in all a solid operation. They do a lot for local charities, too. I've worked a few of their "Food For Sharing" events, and anything we needed, they got to us in short order. Running low on mashed potatoes or ham? No problem. With a phone call to the manager they make it in their kitchen and run it right over.

Brian I worked at Minyards Food Stores for 28 years, I managed for 25 of those years- So that’s where what I will say about H‑E‑B comes from, for whatever that’s worth-
It’s about the best ran grocery store chain I have ever seen. Not imperfect for sure, but they do what they do very good. Not saying other chains that have survived the last 20 years aren’t good chains, mine did not survive as others did.
But it’s my favorite store to shop for groceries, hands down. I buy all the groceries for my household, I always have, even before I retired, I don’t just go when steaks are on sale somewhere.
I just find better service, well stocked stores consistently with them.
I tend to agree with you. I had 31 years in the grocery business as well. HEB actually recruited me after I retired and offered me a management job, but I declined and spent 14 years in manufacturing until I retired 6 months ago. They are a tough competitor in every sense of the word. When they open a new store in a new area they want a certain % of the market share and do whatever it take to get it. Some of their huge stores never turn a profit for 5 years. They have older stores that are cash cows that foot the bills for the new larger stores until they eventually become profitable. I will also bet that everytime a new HEB opens somewhere, there are at least 1 and possibly 2 grocery stores nearby that will probably close.

supposedly Mr. Butts and Mr. Brookshire had a gentlemans agreement not to overlap each others territory too much back in the day. Their heirs don't care. I'd love to have an HEB near me. I'd almost drive 100 miles to one. HEB is da bomb.

I am curious to see if it is any good.
