Maybe 5% of the time. It depends on what I'm wearing, where I'm going, and what I'm doing.

We were taught in CARRY class when it was CONCEALED CARRY that a Mass Shooter situation will make someone with an open pistol on his hip an early target for the Mass Shooter. Guess I dont want to test that theory so concealed for me and my wife. Here in the contry where we live not an issue-yet!

It's always best to be a wolf in sheep's clothing (carrying concealed) until you can gain the tactical advantage and bring out the wolf in you.

^^ this, more or less.

My percentage of open carry time is probably a bit higher, and typically I do it when I'm professionally dressed. When I'm wearing a blazer/sportcoat with a buttondown shirt, good jeans/slacks and boots, it's less disturbing to the average civilian to see the Sig (previously the 1911) on my hip than when I'm wearing dockers and a tshirt.

I understand the theories about 'the bad guy will target you first'. I'm of the opinion that the vast majority of bad guys will be deterred by the mere sight of an armed citizen, and the small minority that's left won't care one way or the other. The main concern I have is to ensure that someone can't easily grab it from my holster, so no small of back type carry if it's open - 2 o'clock or 3 o'clock position when I do carry this way.

*edit* If you count the time that I'm 'printing' or that my shirt may move and temporarily reveal the holster, then my open carry time is much higher. But most people don't notice such things - they really don't.

Look up The Armed Fisherman on YouTube. He is the "Uncle Zeek" of Florida's Open Carry laws.

I only conceal carry, I would hate to be that one guy who’s gun gets swiped by a bad guy while someone is bagging my groceries. Just picked up a Springfield Hellcat, realllllllyyyy liking it.

Concealed only for me. I admit that my situational awareness is lacking which causes tunnel vision that would allow an open carry weapon to be snatched. I've always been a fan of admitting ones faults and working around them.

You are giving away tactical advantage and if you do open carry you should carry in a retention holster.

I have nothing against it. However, if I were a mass shooter. The person who open carries is my 1st target. IJS

The tactical advantage argument always makes me pause. Tactically speaking, both open and concealed offer different advantages and weaknesses. The tactical advantage of concealed carry comes from a situation in which you can get to cover or hidden enough where you can draw your weapon unseen, and then ambush the bad guy.

But in a situation where a bad guy is coming at you and you have to get to your gun before they get to you, then open carry is by far the best option.

Either way, it is imperative that you practice your draw. Practice sitting, standing, and from a prone position on the floor. Practice drawing and acquiring a target. Practice drawing and squeezing off an aimed shot. Practice practice practice.

If your gun is double action, the laser snap caps make a great practice/training tool.

I typically just wear a loose fitting fishing shirt and shorts. I carry a g43 on a him "open carry" holster but with the loose fitting shirt or hoodie you cant see it. Helluva a lot more comfortable and accessible that way too.
