Wife and I started the "4 year plan" for retirement a couple years ago, came into 2021 with nothing but the house and boat (bought Dec 28 2020) payment. She can't retire until she hits 50, 2yrs 8 months from now, has the years, but not the age. I on the other hand will probably retire within 2yrs 9 months or 3yr/9mon trying to pay off the boat, or as much as we can before we buy a new truck. Then its fishing and whatever we want all the time.

I retired at age 57. Worked 37 years with one agency. Have a great retirement plan. I made sure that my house and cars were totally payed off when I retired. I also have several investment funds that I have been adding to all throughout my working years. They are also paying off for me. Been living very comfortable and enjoying being retired. Life is good! thumb

I planned to retire at the end of 2022 when I hit full retirement age for SS but thanks to Covid retirement came early. At least I got a decent Severance and several months of health insurance paid for. Truck is only debt I have but with a 0% loan there is no incentive to pay off. I qualified for unemployment and will milk it as long as possible. I will work full time again for the right job and shorter commute. Only problem with unemployment is doing 5 job searches per week.

My wife will retire in exactly 2 years. I don't believe that I'll ever retire. I love my job that much!

I did too. It was the commute that I did not like. I went in early but the commute home could be a beating.

I retired at 60 almost four years ago. As a “senior manager/director” my company offered me early retirement and for the first five years they would paid me about 60% of my salary each June (called supplemental retirement plan) plus pension, company paid life insurance and lower (than open market) retiree health insurance. Everything was going fine for three years and then the pandemic hit last year and my old company filed for bankruptcy.

The first thing they did was pull our health insurance, shortly after that they quit paying supplemental retirement plan, and finally they pulled our company paid life insurance. I still get my pension as that is managed by an outside financial institution and is fully funded. The idea of this supplemental plan was to get those who qualify to full retirement at 65. Then Medicare would kick in.

Health insurance was the biggest shock. For my wife and I it is $1,086 a month and that’s a discounted price. Without the discounted price it is about $1,800 a month. Luckily we have been planning a long time for retirement so we have saved enough to cover it. It’s just now some of my money to play with is being used to pay for health insurance.

The biggest thing that ticked my off about my old company is two weeks before they declared bankruptcy, they awarded the current senior executives a huge bonus.

Things change!

Some great benefits right there. Sucks it ended like that.

Jumped out at 59 1/2 almost 5 years ago and have not regretted it one day. Spent 35 years with a large oilfield firm and the politics and political correctness made the decision to go extremely easy.

February 11, 2024. I hope that I can work part time enough to pay for insurance and a car payment.

Good luck rayzor....getting a part time gig for those of us over 60 is tough. You wouldn't think so but the avg part time gig wage where I'm moving to in Florida is about $8 bucks. You'd have to work a 40 hour week to actually make any money...:) Even given a decent set of skills, a college education and boat load of experience I'm just another old person among a sea of old people in Flo-rida...:)

Around in my neck of the woods you would be hard pressed finding many jobs that pay only 8$ an hour. HEB hires off an on for 12.50 -15 $..Lowes, Home Depot, Brookshires even Walmart don't start with that low a wage... people with the right skills education etc can find contract work for companies and do better than hourly wages

I was going to retire in 4 to 5 years. However, my company is freezing the pension and going to take away PRB's if we do not retire before 01-JAN-2023. I will be 59 and 10 months old. So, I will be
retiring next year and will have to hopefully find a job to help with insurance.

Property taxes, don’t forget to throw those in there.
