Thinking about making the trip. Will have to go down to McAllen on business in April, so I figured I may as well do it. Where to stay? Where is a good general area for a novice to the lake to launch, run and fish? Thanks for any help or tips.

At the State Park and Tigre that is true. I understand the County Ramp in Zapata is running at one lane.

Most recent reports and updates can be found here http://www.tackleandrods.com/lake/flash.htm Good reading!

We always stay at Flacon Heights Motel. Run by mi amigo Carlos. Its a good. Not fancy but 5 mins to the ramp and has that borderland vibe you might like. Have stayed many times and its always been good.

somebody correct me if I'm wrong but if you stay in falcon heights, you gonna have to drive 30 miles to zapata to launch your boat unless you got 4 wheel drive....and....closest restaurants are also in zapata....

Yes on the 4x4. You would need that if launching at the State Park.

There are places to eat in Roma which is 15 mins give or take or Zapata is about 30 mins.

You can bring your own chow. Which IMO is the way to go. They offer grills and a small outdoor kitchen you can cook in. They provide some basic pots and pans, coffee cups etc.

Its not staying at the Motel 6... but myself and my squad always had a great time.

When the ramp at the state park is wet, Falcon Heights works pretty good. We brought our food and cooked there no problem.

We usually stay at the best western in town and have never had any issues. Plenty of outlets outside for charging and a couple of grills in the back of the property. You can park your truck and boat right next to your room. We have been launching at the county ramp and running south. There should be plenty of fish in Tigers and Pierces next month. Stop at Falcon lake tackle and they’ll point you in the right direction.
