If I get a generator, how do I route extension cords into the house without making things worse?

In thru the garage close the garage door on the cords. For the door going in the house close it the best you can.

Raise a window, lay down a towel, cords, another towel, and close the window as tight as possible. Make a wind proof seal.

Install generator on a flat surface with a five foot clear radius around it
I made a diy ground for the generator from a 5ft copper pipe hammered 1 ft into the ground and 10gauge copper wire from the ground terminal of the generator ring clamped to copper pipe and then electrical tape then gorilla tape

I used a 50 ft 12 gauge heavy duty extension cord from the generator under the closed outside garage door
Then, in the garage; connected it into another 12 gauge 50ft heavy duty extension cord to 12 gauge 3 way splitter to run three electric heaters

To get it inside the house, I removed the under the door threshold for more clearance under the door.
Then sealed door with towels.

The proper sequence for turning on is as follows
1. Turn on generator
2. Plug in first extension cord into generator 3 prong extension cord out
3. Plug in second extension cord with three way splitter at the end
4. Plug in the three heaters

Reverse the process for turning off the generator

That makes sense. Thanks

This is what I did. I learned that a good extension cord matters. I had a cheap one that was tripping the breaker. Had to change it out.

This is what we did.

I just wished our furnace would have ran off the generator.

Seems to be a wide spread problem and one i had never knew about.

We had never needed to try and run ours on one before and hope we never have to again!

Thru my smallest window in the kitchen then it wont close that last little bit so I use painters tape and tape up the gap and throw a towel over the gap.

Only ever done it once last year, I may wire in a plug this summer.

A whole house generator would be great, but right now, I don’t think I could feed enough fuel to it to make it last. A smaller generator is something I think I could keep going for a lot longer. I already plowed the wife’s car in the ditch getting supplies, I can’t imagine trying to feed a whole house monster.

Still trying to figure out how I’m going to make this work

Where's your main breaker box? If you can access it then your problems are all solved without extension cords. You can use your home wiring and close down circuits you don't want to use by turning off those breakers. If you have a couple of open spaces in your breaker box then your issues are more simplified. You'll just need the heavy cord to run to the box.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.
