Right. Again, I get it.
Maybe if my house lost power I’d feel differently. In fact, I’m sure I would. But a gas powered generator seems like a hassle for upkeep and an expensive luxury for a guy like me. I can go around the corner to one of three new hotels for about $75 a night.
I buy a new gas trimmer and lawn mower every two years, because they tend to not start when I need them. I’m afraid I’d have a generator that simply would be a hassle and waste of money when I needed it, do to lack of use.

Glad you posted that. I just had that exact pulsar generator pulled up on Amazon. I would like atleast a 9500 generator but not sure what brand to go with. And of course I'm a cheapo and don't wanna break the bank.

Tractor Supply and Lowes has them. Mine is one its way.

I have one of the 4000/3500 champion generators that sit by the entrances at Cabelas/Bass Pro. Thing worked like a champ for 3 days. Powered 2 refridgerators and freezers, an old school 50” plasma tv, Xbox, and home audio receiver, pc w/ two monitors, cell phone chargers, coffee maker, lights in the kitchen, living room and entry way all at once. Didn’t skip a beat. I have always thought it would be under powered until I actually put it to use. Was pleasantly surprised, especially since it started up relatively easy after sitting in the garage for literally 8 years since the last time it was used.

Bought this 3 years ago, never really used it, had 6 hours on it when I plugged into panel and have run it for 30 hours straight. Miller Bobcat 250 gas welder with EFI AC/DC Engine Drive Welder (Kohler) With Electronic Fuel Injection.12 KW peak power. Heck buy one of these and after you done firing the house , make money on the side and be a welder man.

OP - I have the Predator 3500 and it's been running constant for 3 days. Beast of a generator. I bought it for $400 used on FB marketplace. JP - be aware that you need a 240V generator to run this. It's not set up for the normal 110V output. I have one and used to have a Husky/Subaru generator that worked well with it. About 5000 watts IIRC. But that thing was way too loud for RV camping, so I swapped it out for a Predator 3500. The Predator is fantastic for camping - runs everything in my camper and you can barely hear it. However, it only runs one side of my transfer switch. I have the fridge, septic, and water heater on one side, and microwave, living room lights, and living room plugs on the other side. With the Predator, I can't run lights or plugs or microwave because it only outputs at 110V. It's pretty difficult (but not impossible) to find an inverter that outputs 240V, so just be aware of that.

That interlock is absolutely the way to go! For anyone who understands enough to manage their load, there's no need for a transfer switch that can start costing 10x as much as the interlock kit. I like it because I have the option to choose which circuits I want to power.

I have the 3500 Watt Super Quiet Inverter Generator from there. Thing is a beast. Spark arrestor plugged up this summer. Pulled it out and kept on sending it. It's a good machine. What all are you running on the 3500? Or, what all can you run on it? I had it cranked up yesterday. Had the heater(heat strip) on, compressor was on and off, lights, radio, and charging one of our kart stands. All in our race trailer. She's a goodern. Was just curious if it run a (home) fridge, a small heater or two (if needed), charge phones, TV for wifee? No, you'll need more starting amps for the fridge compressor unless that's all you have attached. In addition, consider you have two small heaters - even 1000W - those two items alone will take 2000 of the 3500 watts. Just not really feasible. You risk brown-out with an overload on the generator. You may discover the impact with eventual premature failure of the compressor in the fridge.

Buying one now is like getting a tornado shelter after the storm passes by.
I get the need to be prepared, but what are the chances that this ever happens again? 1000/1 or less?
It was 72 years ago that it got this cold. In some parts of Texas, a generator is more likely to be needed after a hurricane or tornado. It's not just about winter storms. In the last 15 years or so, I've used my for TWO winter storms, and one hurricane. In the case of the hurricane, we didn't have power (at all) for 7 days. I've also had some other localized power outages where having the generator came in handy.
