Before my last jar of the #11 frogs was used up along with the other 2 sizes, I made plaster molds. The soft plastic copies have the same tail-flap as pork and do as well. But then I went to a Gander Mt. store closing sale and found plastics similar in design.

I even catch fish with the smaller size rigged on a light jig minus the skirt:

Note: Something I discovered that you might want to try: using a light skirted jig and any of the trailers shown, instead of working it on the bottom, swim the jig like a spinnerbait any place you would run one or crankbait. Caught bass first time I tried it.

I loved the Uncle Josh CrawFrog Brown on a jig pitching timber....brown was my go to color. They would last all day and you had to remove them with a knife or bolt cutters. But they would out fish plastic especially in cold water!!

One pork frog would last all year if you didn't let it dry out. The trick was getting it OFF the hook. I learned to use a small knife to open the hole just a tad before I put it on the jig. You take it off at the end of the day and put it back in the jar.

Last week took a drive to Bass Pro in Grapevine and low and behold they had Uncle Josh pork trailers. I thought at the time I remembered Uncle Josh had gone out of business years ago. Should have grabbed me a jar or two. They were on a bottom shelf with the plastic trailers fyi. Since I was use to plastic trailers, didn't know that pork trailers were really better for cold water fishing. My bad.

Denny Brauer shared a tip about using pork frogs.
He put crawfish scent in the jar a couple days before a tournament. The scent stays embedded in the pork but the pork chunk goes bad after a week to 10 days.

I tried it and it did what he said it would. I could not stand dunking chunks that I knew would be toast next week so when I did it I did it two at a time just before a tournament.

And they suck compared to the old ones, not the same I bought some last year. Jury is still out on the papaw E pork, I have yet to get my hands on any of these.

I was sorry to hear UNCLE JOSH went out of business when it did. Back in the 70's a favorite of mine was the purple split tail eel fished on a 3/8 oz. purple Klein's Weapon hair/rubber jig. Back then Shasta in N CA had a good population of Florida strain Largemouth along with Smallmouth and they both loved it. One problem was boating from one location to another the pork could dry out and stiffen. I had to place my jig and pork in a dipping jug which I had mounted near the bow on the deck filled with fish oils or place the jig and pork in a small, dampened pouch while boating or casting a different bait. At one time UNCLE JOSH was custom cutting a 12" pork bait labeled Big Boy in the shape of a rock fish fillet that I would use as a trailer jigging for Halibut and rockfish in Alaska. To me the most likeable characteristic of pork baits were the durability when catching multiple fish. Unlike many plastics, pork could withstand allot of abuse. A small inconvenience was getting a large, barbed hook through the pork or removing it from the hook once it was on. A small slit with a sharp pointed knife would prepare the pork in advance but occasionally allowed the pork to come off while fishing. I had an assortment original UNCLE JOSH pork from years ago but recently mixed in some juice to keep them in liquid that didn't agree with them and had to discard the whole lot. A decade ago, when Falcon was kicking out 50/60 fish days on a regular basis Chunking a pork trailer on a jig was both productive and efficient. A bait you could play rough with.

The new uncle josh actually come with a pre cut horizonal slit, this was a good addition, don't remember if the ones in the glass jars ever had this in the later years before they discontinued it, but like I said the pork is not the same pork they used to make and sizes available are limited to 2 variations.

can a pork chunk trailer stay on a jig exposed to the elements all day or does it need to stay soaking?

You have to keep it wet, it will turn into Kryptonite if you leave it out to dry. Just a dunk every now and then, but if you don't pay attention they will dry up and get stiff.

i never had much luck trying to take them off the jig and put them back in the jar for later use either. I usually couldn't get them to slip back over the barb on the hook without cutting then off; though I figure someone has figured out how to do it. The neat part about that is you don't have to worry about them coming off.

Still glad I make my own and have more than enough of the trailers shown in my reply to last for years. There wasn't and still isn't an advantage to using pork. Tail action is the most important quality with the body a close second when nose hooked. Caught a bunch of smallmouth and largemouth on them !
