Pork used to act better than plastics because most trailers would stiffen up when they got cold.
Modern plastics have addressed that to a large point but if I had it I'd still use it. No 11 most of the time.

That's totally wrong. The lack of action is where it excelled. Its prime was to bulk up and slow the fall with its buoyancy and still have a large presentation for big bass with slow metabolism in cold water

I ordered a couple of jars of Uncle Josh #11 pork frogs from Acme Tackle recently but they were about $12.00 for a jar of 3.

My big fish go-to bait. Still have a stash but had to swap from original containers - they were failing.

You can build bulk into plastic. You can't put more pliable in bulky plastic to simulate pork. Today they use all the swimming tails that were not used much back then.
I've read it and experienced it since the 60's, back when more people were fishing pork than plastic in the winter.
Back when nobody used rubber skirts. They were all bucktail.

Well most anglers and pros will tell you that in cold water you want to have a jig trailer that doesn't have a lot of action, therefore the plastic would be better since you say the pork stays more supple which means it would have more movement than plastic. I used to use pork baits on my jigs but never noticed that they worked any better than plastic. I did very well with the Lake Fork Tackle pig claw, the big one. It was bulky and did not have a lot of action but it would catch fish.

lack of action and buoyancy was the point i was trying to make for cold water. plastic moves more and has shapes that move crazy fast but is nowhere near as buoyant so it falls faster, great in warmer water when the bass are more active and a have a bigger strike zone. pork has less action and slows the fall yet keeps a big profile without increasing the fall rate. i did well with the pig claw too.

When I ordered the pork recently it wasn’t for using as a jig trailer but don’t ask me why but having it on a Colorado blade Spinnerbait for night fishing was the way to go for me. While fishing mainly Fork all through the 90’s I realized that it helped me keep a slow retrieve and I really felt the bigger profile helped and bass definitely seemed to really hold on to the bait when they hit it. I always had a large pork on a #6 blade and the smaller pork on a #5 blade.
Brings back some great memories.

For those that like pork a new supplier

I was a bit past their time. Were they a 1 time use thing, like 1 a day or did you have to use several every day? Seems that one of the pros said they were being made again.

I used some in high school, I remember having to summon the force of god to jamb my cheap [censored] Eagle Claw hooks into them. When it came time to reload, I would just cut the line toss the hook and start anew.

I was fortunate enough to be able to fish with Uncle Josh Pork trailers when the use of this product was at it's prime. I never did a lot of jig fishing back then but I caught a fish or two using them. The past year or two I've gone full on into jig fishing; it's my primary weapon of choice these days. Having a pork style trailer would be awesome; especially for this time of year, the texture and feel of these trailers is going to feel more like a living creature than anything made of plastic plus with the pork skin attached they are pretty tough as well.

I lived in Austin tx area up until 97, there was an old fishing tackle store with a massive amount of uncle josh pork. When they were closing down i bought a suitcase full of my favorites. I still have them, and most of the lids are so rusted that i have to open them with a big pair of pliers. No#11 are my favorite.. I still use them, the last part of 2021 I pulled them out for several weeks. I found a large crawfish on my home lake, I "borrowed" one of it's claws and matched it perfectly with the brown pork.

I learned how well they worked from an old fishing buddy, Craig Mooney. Wish I could track that guy down. He was a monster at fishing. (He lived in Round Rock, and one heck of a mentor).
