If you live on the lake, pond, or a creek, you might think about putting up a Wood Duck house. You can order one online or build one out of a 2X12.

It needs to be on 1&1/2 or 2" pole about 10' off of the ground, about 5' from water. Add some pine straw to the bottom and your set to go.

I had a successful pair last year, I think they had 13 baby ducks. They were sitting on their house at 6:50 this morning.

Spring gets started early in the wood duck world!

I built a nesting box for owls a couple years back, but the owls haven't found it yet. Last year wood ducks used it. It's about 18 feet up and made from scrap pallet wood. I ran tension wire from the pole to a couple trees nearby to keep the wind from rocking it so much since I think I only used an 1-1/2 inch pole.

Think you could easily make 2-3 out of a wood pallet.

Then just screw them into the top of 10ft schedule 40 PVC and quickrete cement into the ground.

I'd use 2-3 inch all purpose exterior screws from Wmart (100 count for about $4)

Made 9 nesting boxes for a variety of birds from the pallets that our greenhouse kit came on. They made really nice nesting boxes.

Funny you posted this-
I am waiting as we speak for a guy to start digging me out a new pond-
(last week he said he is about two weeks away according to weather)
I’ve been looking at you tube on how to build these wood duck boxes, along with other ways to attract various ducks to my new pond.
There are quite a few small and large ponds close to me but I finally will have my own.
Those wood ducks are nice to look at for sure-

The best boxes I made were for the swallows. They eat of ton of the mosquitoes from the pond that the frogs don't get.

Good idea, I’ll add swallow boxes to the plans-

My buddy has two boxes on Mary’s creek. He places a camera inside the box and records the hatching. Then it’s jump day. It’s so cool to watch them ducklings work their way to the opening to their mom waiting down below. Can’t wait for this years video.

I think Wood Ducks are one of the prettiest ducks there is.

I follow Jack Brittingham on Instagram. He has some of these Mandarin Ducks around his place in East Texas. Gorgeous birds.

If that was a baby bear, Flyfisherman would blow its head off.

I have about 18 mallard hanging around my pond. I put out about 20lbs or corn each Sunday.

Usually the last few years we have 2 mallards hanging out, but I wasn't putting out corn. This year has made a huge difference with feeding them.

a dead tree on the property.
