We are currently at an RV resort where I have met many folks who served in the Navy specifically. Got me to thinking.for those who did serve what made you choose the branch of service you ended up in?
Thank you for your service. soldier

The schools and the GI bill. At the time, word was that the Navy and AF had the best electronics schools. The AF won after considering the thought of being on a ship at sea for months at a time.

a potential draft # had some influence on my joining the navy, and the ones that have served in the family were all navy.

I always wanted to be a Marine. Thankfully, I got my choice when on 22 DEC 1965 I signed on the dotted line in the Denver Marine Corps OSO. I have never regretted it.

p.s., I too got to fly and even managed to land on an aircraft carrier.

Look! Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's an EMP!

I did not serve, but every male on my Dad's side of the family before me did. I asked my grandpa once why he joined the Marine Corp on December 8, 1941, day after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He told me the recruiter sold him that the Marines would kill the most Japs, and so that's where he went for the next 31 years.

Recruited by an Air Force recruiter. Got bombarded at MEPS when I tested by Army and Navy to join them instead, but wanted to work on Aircraft, so went with my initial direction. Army was tempting, they were talking possible Warrant Officer and flying helicopters.

May you be treated the way you treat other people, today and everyday!

At the time, Navy was troubleshooting to the component level, which intrigued me, so I went Navy. 1988-1998
I also considered deployments. Even if I was on a ship, I'd always have a roof over my head. Didn't care for the thoughts of living in the field for any length of time.
That said, I was in boot camp/electronics school/satellite communications school for almost 2 years.
Spent 2 years at SIMA Norfolk troubleshooting and repairing test equipment.
2-1/2 years in Guantanamo Bay, CU (NAVCOMMDET)
3-1/2 years in Chesapeake, VA (NAVSATCOMMFAC)

Love airplanes and the AF tends to have better facilities and working conditions than the other branches.

Okie by birth, Texan by choice.

I had narrowed the choice down to AF or Navy. I was informed by a recruiter that the racks (beds) on aircraft carriers are longer than most other ships at 5'11".

I am 6' tall.

Go Air Force!
