Side note I know that the closure was originally set to be ten weeks from the start but it seems that time had passed.

Let's hope this isn't another lead-up to the 2011 drought disaster.

10 years ago I worked with the State Park in an effort to get Yegua Creek on the Texas Paddle Trails list but as you might know the Yegua is a fickle little beast. Seems like it is seldom just right for paddling between cycles of drought and flood.. same goes for the fishing..

One look at the Yegua in April 2011 before the drought really took hold..


and another look in August..

This was the same day in September 2011 that the devastating Bastrop fires broke out and destroyed much of the area. My brother had just moved into their new house three weeks earlier and called to say they were being evacuated due to the fires.

Lake Somerville is a flood control and water conservation reservoir so It's important to keep in mind that this cycle of drought and flood has always been a huge factor for the lake in many ways.




The COE has the duty to manage the water and that is not a easy job with the cycles of flood and drought.

History indicates that the lake will rise again..

Any good rain this time of year that gets the creeks flowing good will bring up the fish even if they have to cross a mile of really shallow mud flats to get up to the creek.

Some fishing trips are just more memorable than others..

When I was stationed at Ft. Hood 92 through 2004 all I can remember about the weather is that there is no such thing as a normal year with regards to rain. It is seemingly only feast or famine with not much with in the in-between range. I am definitely hoping this will not be the beginning of a drought event. We have had some minimal rain up this way in Killeen but 90 percent of it seems to have missed the Lake Somerville area and what have had hasn't really had a noticeable effect on the rivers, creeks and lakes around here. Definitely praying for some appreciable moisture.

Two major watersheds for lake Somerville are the Yegua and Nails Creek. Basically it needs to rain a lot between Giddings and Rockdale for the lake to take on water.

Some rain in the forecast this week. Fingers crossed.
