That was just last month and by far the greenest grass in his neighborhood.

Bermuda is easy to dominate. I have a hard time showing my domination with St. Augustine.

Sure you can. Roller22 and CCTX have awesome St Aug lawns. We got my nephews St Aug looking lush this year. If he lived in the city he would have line domination. I mapped his yard out for him and I gave him a bunch of Carbon X fert I had left over. I had him apply 1/2lb of Nitrogen per month of it and it looks great. In your case I can guarantee your soil Ph is 7.9-8.0 - That whole swath from Austin down through San Antonio has really high Ph soils. Next year you could apply Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0 at a rate of 2.5lbs per 1000sq feet every month and water it in after application and I think you will like the results.

This is my St. Augustine last year. If I stay on top of my pre-emergent, fertilizer insecticide schedule, it will look like this every year. I have experimented with it about 5 years ago with trying to use organic products and I about lost the whole yard. I also tried going without pre-emergent for one year to see what would happen, bad idea. As long as I stay on the scheduled applications, it is strong and green each summer.

This is what happened when I didn't put out any Grub-X this year and the armadillo raided my yard for several weeks. Not a pretty picture. I had previously caught 2 armadillos and 1 possum in the past 10 years. Never did catch this guy.

Nutsedge - a grassy weed that seems to multiply rapidly. I finally pulled one that shows the nut on the root. When you pull this weed, if you don't get the nut it will multiply.

Is that the only spot in the lawn? If it's a pretty small spot it could be something as simple as a dog p spot. But it does kinda look like Brown Patch. If it is BP that spot will get larger pretty quickly. Hopefully Turf Dawg will chime in on that. I zoomed in the best I could but it's tough to see the blades on the greener healthier grass. But some of them do look like they have lesions on them. Get some clear pics of those and/or see if they look like this. If so you have Gray Leaf Spot at a minimum.

We're about a month out for your spring pre emergent application. There is a good thread already going here in the DIY about pre emergents. But I would like to talk about them in this thread too so it will be easy to come back to.

Your target app date in DFW is between Feb 1st and Feb 15th. If you live in Houston your might check and see what dates Randy Lemon recommends and if you're in San Antonio see what Bob Webster says. Bob is 100% organic but probably has a date time frame. I'm a Feb 1st guy. There are many pre emergent products on the market. I'm going to talk about the two I like that are easy to locate. I like Prodiamine and Isoxaben.

Prodiamine trade names. Barricade and Sta-Green Crab Ex. On the Sta Green you want the brown label. The one without fertilizer.

https://www.solutionsstores.com/bar...ZDOVhNgtcZUA1qXnhaBoCewgQAvD_BwE#156=928

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sta-Green-...gV5Yw6YhtRoC6e4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I like Prodiamine for grassy weed control. Now you're going to see a big price difference between the Barricade and the Sta Green. They are basically the same product. The difference is Barricade has a higher percentage of active ingredient than the Sta-Green. Barricade is 0.58% and the Sta Green is 0.37% - So you will need to use more of the Sta Green per 1000 sq feet to get the same protection. At the end of the day the Sta Green might end up being a little cheaper per 1000sq feet. I'm not going to do the math.

I am going to use Barricade as the example since I can't find a label on the Sta Green. You want to apply a 6 month application rate. On the label it will say the yearly maximum you can use is X amount per 1000 sq feet. Barricade is 6lb per 1000 per year. So you want to divide that by 2. So you want to apply 3lbs per 1000sq feet for your February application. And make sure you water it in well. Try and time your application prior to a good rain chance if you don't have a irrigation system. The Sta Green label will have the same year max. Do the same simple math for it and apply.
Barricade Label https://www.solutionsstores.com/amfilerating/file/download/file_id/3149/

The other one I like is Isoxaben. Trade name Ferti Lome Broadleaf Weed Control With Gallery. This is your broadleaf pre emergent. It's pricey. It might not be budget friendly to apply both Prodimine and Iso. If you want to skip the spring application of Iso that's fine. The broadleaf weed pressure going through spring and into summer typically isn't that bad, plus they are easy to kill once they popup. If you're going to budget one app of Iso a year you would want to use it for you winter app when you apply in late August. But if you can budget 2 apps great.

Per the Ferti Lome label. Do not apply more than 19lbs per 1000sq feet per year. That's not cheap. If you're only going to do the winter app I would apply at their high rate rounded up to 6lbs per 1000.
https://www.domyown.com/msds/Broadleaf-Weed-Control-Label.pdf

To expand a bit more on the Gallery/Isoxaben. I didn't start using it until this past winter. And I have had zero winter weeds so far. That said Prodimine is labeled for some boradleaf weeds. Last winter prior to using Gallery I had very few winter weeds pop up. They were mostly dandelions. Which were easy to make a couple spot spray applications of a broadleaf weedkiller to take them out. Over all the Prodimine did a great job on it's own. But the two together is a great combo.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reminder, we had a really bad growth of Burweed (Soliva sessilis) (the little 1 spine stickers) but per your suggestion Derek I put out several hundred pounds of pre-emergent. The yard has not looked this good in winter in many a year. Last year the weeds were so bad we had to mow every few weeks to keep things looking neat and orderly. I bought a drop spreader to get near the edges of the flower beds and walkways and I can see where I missed a few places by an inch to six inches. I will be pulling and using a broadleaf herbicide next week to spot treat.
