Nothing new. Was a popular feature back in the 90's that faded away.

You probably didn't realize the Tatula P&F does not have a flipping switch.

Well I have never used one. But I love my Daiwa reels, though I do have other brands in the boat. I‘m using Daiwa Rojo pro caster reels most of the time for my flipping / pitching. They are older reels but super smooth and have the little button that engages the reel without turning the handle. I’ll never spend 250.00 on a reel! But it’s good to hear about all the cool stuff out there!

If you push back up on the thumb bar after you make a flip or pitch the reel will be engaged similar to a flipping switch. It allows for one handed operation. This works on all Daiwa baitcasters made in last 10-12 years. Its a designed feature.

I am speaking specifically about Daiwa. The rest I have no clue about. You may have known but I bet a lot of others might not. That is the point of these forums. To share info and help folks out.

Oddly enough, I’m about to refurbish my Castiac. What’s the best site for replacement parts?

If you lift up on the cast button on a Lews or MOST properly functioning reels, the spool will still not engage until the handle is turned. I just finished a major disassembly and cleaning of all my Lews, Steez, and Shimanos. None of them are capable of what y’all are talking about. There is two springs and a “sawblade” looking gear that are designed to keep the spool release from simply engaging. The saw blade looking gear kicks back the part that is held in place by those two springs. The release thumb knob thing will press down and not return, even if you physically lift it, back to the upward position.

The only reel I have seen that had that ability was a $99 quantum. And it had a switch that had to be flipped to allow it to happen.

It is a designed feature on Daiwa reels as I stated. I have taken some in house classes that Daiwa puts on so that we can go out and train the employees of dealers etc.

The daiwa P/f definitely does it.

So I’ll decide between the Daiwa p/f and the Lews (don’t like the ardent). Which rod do y’all like for $150 max?

Daiwa Tatula XT 7’6” heavy flippin

Duckett triad 7’4” or 7’6”

Dobyns fury 7’3” mag heavy or 8’ heavy flippin

Shimano slx 7’5” heavy

Falcon lowrider 7’6” heavy

Something else?

The Lowrider, but I’d get the 7’3” heavy cover jig version. Personal preference.

You can flip the thumb lever up if you so choose with your thumb while flipping.

You can get these on ebay listings or by calling american fishing legacy and asking for a deal usually for $209 each.

I like this reel a lot, I only own these reels and Steeze reels. The Steeze are smoother, but not capable with the T wing to work well w 20# floro or at all with braid in my opinion.

I do fill it some with mono and tape that off so I can re spool and only use about 100-110 yards.

On the part about the T wing not working well with 20# flouro is that straight flouro or flouro to braid leader knot ?
