Lol, ok. I can not say my thoughts and feelings of you because Iโm a mod and people cry foul when we are honest. If you want to cry about this look to the rules, there is an email address provided for you to submit a complain to. I provide my statements based on a 17 year career in HVAC. My knowledge, experiences, etc. TIFWIW, Lord knows there will be an expert along soon that knew a buddy that once saw a van driving while knew a guy that did hvac for a week.... LOL what if the earth got hit by a huge astroid? What if a car ran into him when he tested the contactor? What if he fell on the screwdrivers and drove them thru his heart when he got them out of his tool box? You can do what if all day long, and this random guy on an internet fishing forum will still say it is a safe test.
PS: What are the breakers for? The symptoms you describe would have tripped the breaker.

Gotta agree with Jons here. No one here knows this guys mechanical aptitude. What some might consider "oh it's safe as can be...just DO IT!" could back fire in this guys face when he doesn't know enough to turn off the disconnect has an arc flash. Or has a compressor go nuclear melt down right beside him. Seriously, you may have done it many times over, maybe this guy hasn't, considering he's even ASKing to begin with. I'm confident enough in myself and that I DON'T know everything and have the broken machinery and scars to know it's called learning.

I gotta say, I really love threads like this. Guy posts a generic description of a problem, equivalent to my wife saying the car is making a funny noise. Then 10 people jump in with ideas and potential fixes - even though there is no way they could know what is causing the problem in the first place. Then those 10 people start picking apart the other's solutions to the problem. Meanwhile, the OP still hears a funny noise, but is now afraid to go outside because if he gets within 30 feet of his air conditioner, his whole house is going to blow up!

Jons3825, I bet you are correct!! COFF, too funny but true, just stuck my screwdriver in there and now my truck won't start! I just picked up contacts and capacitor and I'll throw them in later after the temp drops under 95. If that don't do it I'll make that dreadful call for help. $$$$

Don't forget to check the flux capacitor! That's usually the first thing out.

When it starts making the noise, use a couple of screwdrivers and push in on the square buttons and see if it stops noise and unit runs. If it runs, go buy a contactor and install it. This was my first thought but been out of the business 33 years

Outdoor unit (a/c / heat pump) is having some issues. It runs great most of the time but, there are times that it pops off and on and sounds like its going to blow up or something. The off and on carp is like flipping a light switch off and on. Inside fan keeps running and outside unit makes up its own mind on what to do. Once inside temp is reached everything shuts off. What the &^%#^%#$ is going on? Thank you and stay cool. Sounds like a contactor to me. But DO NOT DO ANYTHING, CALL A QUALIFIED REPAIRMAN.

My old neighbor who is in the a/c business just stopped by and checked (everything) out and the problem is.....drum roll......the defrost board. I'm picking up a new board in the morning and we'll be good to go. Hope it will last throughout the night. If anyone in S.A. needs a great and honest a/c person call Joel at My Guy Heating and Air (210) 998-9791 and tell him Ken recommended him.

Look, Iโm glad you got your stuff fixed but any of Jonโs Doomsday Scenarios would have been much more exciting. Next time maybe fiddle with it more.
