This was just a matter of time anyways. It’s costing the fed too much to produce the coin. Bills isn’t the issue, just coin. Private businesses have the right to not accept cash as legal tender.

Due to our kid's sports, we've been cashless for quite some time.

I knew someone was going to say that in this thread.

That's not what "legal tender" means. Your wife was wrong.

Ok, so splain yourself.

The short and easy answer is that PURCHASES are not DEBTS. Legal tender for all DEBTS public and private does not in a legal sense refer to purchases.

It's explained here on the US Treasury Department website:
https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/faqs/Currency/Pages/legal-tender.aspx

I went to a convenience store to get a root beer. It was $2.09 per bottle. I think with tax it was about $2.35. I pulled out 3 ones out of my wallet. The guy at the counter said "we don't have any change". I looked at him and said "well, you're either going to sell it to me for $2.00 or I will put it back in the freezer. I am not going to pay you $3.00 for a soft drink that shouldn't really cost more than a dollar". He said he couldn't sell it to me for 2 dollars. I said "okay" and put it back in the cooler.

Be safe,
Rayzor
