And here I was about to try that. Hurt like heck when it stung me and still hurts, but not nearly as bad. I just tried Pondfish suggestion. Eased the pain a little. Them darned red wasps are frickin’ stout. I haven’t been stung in years, either.

My brother was about 6-7 when he got into a yellow jacket nest. There was a guy at the farm helping grandpa put in some fence poles and he was smoking a cigar,....he chewed up some tobacco and put it on each spot my brother was stung,....stopped the pain.

I went through three cans of wasp spray at the ranch this weekend. Saturday night I was grilling steaks and got stung right in the butt by a yellow jacket. Guess I missed one.

Always, and I mean always, clamp the battery clamps to your nips. That will make you forget all about your little wasp sting.

Were you spraying, or inhaling it?

I'm allergic, so I usually take a Benadryl if I get stung...Benadryl makes an ointment in stick form that will usually get rid of the itch/pain.

I have been stung twice this month by red wasps. I can shake off a yellow jacket or bee sting in a few hours but the red devils make me swell up for 3- 4 days. I find the three steps below to really help:
1. First put ice on the bite for 2-3 minutes
2. Use a cotton ball soaked in vinegar and apply to the bite to neutralize venom
3. After the vinegar, apply a paste of baking soda to the bite

The vinegar is acidic and the baking soda is alkaline because some wasp venoms are more acidic than others and using both will helpneutralize the venom. Using ice first helps keep the venom close to the bite.

Prolonged pain is an indication a stinger may need to be removed. The best way to remove a stinger is to rub a dull blade edge across the stinger. The edge of a butter knife or the thin edge of credit card usually works well and will usually cause the stinger to fall out.

If that doesn’t work, then use tweezers but be careful as you can squeeze out more venom and make it worse. Best to try a blunt object first like the butter knife or credit card.

Steps after you are safely away from the nest...

1 - Remove stinger
2 - Wash with soap and water
3 - Ice/cool pack for 10 minutes, repeat in 30 minutes if needed for swelling
4 - After first ice pack treatment, treat area with a small amount of hydrocortisone cream. If you don’t have any hydrocortisone cream, you can substitute by making a paste of 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water but it’s likely worth a trip to the store to get the cortisone.

BTW, the tobacco remedy is an old wives’ tale. I’ve been on the receiving end of that treatment and other than a distraction, it’s a worthless remedy.
