Went to welch Sunday in the afternoon to hopefully catch an evening bite. Big mistake lol. I've never seen a park so packed with people. Where are you all going for bank access?

lmao yea thank the Corona for that....Been going to big creek man but it's super packed as well. I literally park and walk about 3/4 of a mile to get away from them....but the boats will surround you after that. I damn near passed out carrying all the fish and tackle and net and ect when walking back to the truck it was brutal man. If you're going to walk you have to go light the terrain is rocky or sandy and up and down. The walk out is easy, the walk back will get ya.

I was at Welch Sunday afternoon too. My 1st Time there. Crazy packed. We had a good spot, but no luck. We fished Birch Creek Saturday. My 1st Time there too. I caught 2. Game warden came and reminded us to leave the park at 5pm. First time to leave a fishing spot that early. I’ll be back somewhere on Somerville soon. Already Tried Big Creek. Gonna try Rocky Creek Park next? I gotta figure this place out.

New to the forum and the area. Heard this was the place to find out about the whites at Somerville. I am looking for a little friendly guidance on making a kayak outing with my son. Suggestions on where to put in, areas to fish, and any other tips you might be willing to share. I've read back through several pages on this thread. Hate we missed the run. Thanks in advance for anyone willing to share!

You can put in at Welch and either fish in front of the dam or out on the point of the island. The area around the bouyies off the island is usually very good too.

The elite angler watched in amazement while this guy caught fish left and right..

The Fishtales Dude and I hit the lake early this morning. The 15 inch hybrids were there early, then the white bass showed up in force. Surfacing everywhere. Not every cast, but sure close to it. Lots of big white bass. The next 2 weeks should be the peak period. And we get to fish alone in our Super Secret Spot

What kind of lures do you use? Will jig head+curly tail work? How about roadrunner or roaster tail? How heavy lure do you use? How far away do you cast? Best regards

The white bass will chase the shad early in the morning. They push them right up to the bank. I use a fly rod. Curly tail jigs, rooster tails, etc. will all work. The fish are in a feeding frenzy so they hit about anything. Use as light as you can comfortably throw as the fish are shallow or near the surface in these conditions. As the morning progresses and the sun comes up the fish will move deeper and you'll have to throw farther until they go really deep and disappear.

Jmoe is exactly right from what I've witnessed. I'll be out there in the morning.

This time of year it is really hit or miss no matter where you go on the lake. The whitebass chase the shad wherever they go and they don't stay very long.. For me it is a two hour investment in drive time just for what might be 45 minutes of intense fishing or more likely lots of nothing.

J-Moe, thank you very much for your advices! I tried it this morning along the dam. There are many people and its not easy to find a spot. From 6 to 8, I caught several small male fish and it was fun.
