Heck of a time to be on the creeks today!
Fly pole was too long!
The whitebass were right at my feet!
I had to back off up the bank so I could get the fly in the right place..
These unique conditions only occur every once in a while..
It's late into the whitebass run and a good flush of fresh rainwater raises the creeks real good.
The whitebass will come up from the lake into every creek that is running good.
For the next week the spawn will be full on anywhere there is moving water.
Look for the whitebass to show up in Nails, Cedar, Birch and more up to Newman Bottom on the Yegua.
Think of this as a spawning encore Mother Nature has given us and the fish.
It really helps ensure the success of the spawn overall.
The Yegua is big enough to hold whitebass a little longer than all the other smaller creeks so don't delay fishing them if you can.
These are also the type of conditions that the hybrids will come up the creeks too but only for a very short time.

Quit an interesting day for me. First, I checked on Cedar and Nails. I fished around the bridge at each for a few minutes with no luck. They were extremely muddy and flowing hard. I was surprised that there weren't a bunch of people at Nails fishing for catfish. As those creeks calm down and clear a bit I'll give them another try.

I went to Newman Bottom. The water had muddied up even worse and I knew it would be very difficult to catch fish with the fly rod. The people with spinning rods were doing just fine though. I fished my way upstream stopping at 3 or 4 spots but only caught 1. I tried several different sizes, weights and colors of flies with no luck. So I went back to my truck and got some coyote flies (clouser with colorado blade). I was getting desperate. I caught only 1 more though. Finally, I went to a size 8 chartreuse/white bead chain clouser and started catching fish. I caught 12 before I lost it. Unfortunately, It was my only one bang I tried a couple more colors but only caught 2 more.

Even though I ended the day with only 16, I considered it a huge win. I've always been afraid to fly fish in muddy water because of everything I read and hear people say. Even in this condition, the fly size, drift, presentation were all the same. Just a simple change in color was all that was needed to improve the catch rate. It's still unlikely I could outfish a good spinning rod fisherman on a day like today, but at least I've built some confidence and can continue to improve going forward.

What a rewarding day on the Yegua, I got to bring my mom and sisters and see them catch their first ever fish on lures. I caught 2 real quick before I spent from 8-10am taking fish off their jigs and stringing them up. They had 32 strung up before they were ready for a break. They caught all of theirs within the first 100 yards to the left of the bridge. I then went down below the bridge and drifted a jig down between 2 logs and pulled out my first ever limit all in the same spot in about 1 hours time. I got to meet and chat a bit with YouTubers Master Fisherman and Texas Redbeard today and also the fish slayer J-Moe. I tried experimenting with different jigs today, but the key seemed to be the lightest jig I could throw and a slow retrieve. Half the fish I caught just barely picked it up and turned with it. Back to work this week, good luck out there.

Side note: a heads up to any women like my family found out today, the Bo-John has been removed from Newman's Bottom so there is no privacy anymore.

Great meeting you Yakker Newbie!! Great day for you and the family. I'm sure they had a blast catching those hard fighters. Congrats on the limit thumb

A buddy and I decided to hit Newman’s Bottom this morning before we get locked down here in Austin. The Yegua was running strong and muddy, so we decided to run over to Nails Creek. Nails Creek looked great and dodo not disappointed. Ben was right in his video about it should be good. Need up catching 45 before my buddy slipped and twisted his knee and we left. I probably could have caught 70 or so but i called my buddy over to fish my hole and I would walk around a little and go back and catch 4 or 5 and leave my buddy there. My buddy just could not get them to bite fore himself. Caught all fish on a Eller Special (1/32 blue buck tail). This was my first limit at Nails Creek. So with this lock down in place, my white bass season is over.

ended up catching 8 on small jigs between 4 to 6 pm last sunday...i'll take it. There were a ton of people out there and i couldn't hit the spots i hit the previous time. Also the water was way higher/muddier and flowing way stronger so i had to adjust.

As usual I got outfished in numbers but I did land the big fish of the day and got J-Moe on video fighting a bigger one four full minutes!

Ugh, rub salt in the wound grin Fought that big hybrid for 4 minutes. Finally get him to bank and try to lip him. He shakes his head, breaks the line and the tears are still falling roflmao

The lake is 1/2 foot above normal. The COE opened the gates to 356. I doubt that's wide enough to dump a bunch of fish into the spillway but if there are any whites or hybrids that survived in the creek they will come rushing upstream. I don't hold a lot of hope but you never know.

I wonder if I can convince officials that a trip white bass fishing is like going to the grocery store. There was no hybrids at Nails yesterday. Bet that fun J-Moe and Ben.

Is Newman still open? I know you have to pay online, but I was wondering if the gate was still open.

I can tell you we love it so much we walk miles in the heat and high grass to get to them. I lost 3 lbs. this week grin Good thing is we can catch some during the shad spawn on the main lake too. You will have to join us one day.

Thanks for the report. I can't wait to check it out for myself.

Not sure which I enjoyed more, all the fish, the shots of the bluebonnets at the end or the comedy at 23:18. I have been there with biggun fish before too and its almost always a gut wrencher.

I didn't find it funny at all mad After 4 minutes you think he would have been tired, I know I was grin I've caught plenty enough to know how to grab them, so it was closer to stupidity than comedy roflmao
