I expect with all the electronics we run around with nowdays, it's prolly a rare occurance but if it happens to you it is one of the strangest feelings there is - to be so darn sure you're somewhere you're not. LOL. Last ime it happened to me was on Lavon and I been fishing there for years. A complete T-Floater come up sudden one day and I was heading for shore when it went to coming down so hard you dared not run much past idle and couldn't see more than about 25'. So I thought I was heading straight for the ramp and apparently made a couple of 360's and a 270 or so out there in it. I fanally come up to a shore line and followed it around till I come to a ramp and just sat there till the rain started to let up. I had wound up at a strange ramp and was just completely turned around. I totally couldn't figure out where I was and finally had to go up to the parking lot and aks someone where was I at. Sort of embarassing but I really didn't have a clue. If I wasn't so darn sure I was somewhere I wasn't I might've figured it out but that wasn't happening. I'm directionally challenged anyhow and you take away my landmarks I'm purty well done fer. LOL...Jon

fog happened to me on possum kingdom once, could not figure where I was--saw two guys in a boat fishing a bank I didn't recognize,so I trolled over and ask "where I was".. the guy on the front says--"Possum Kingdom".. I say , ok, thanks and wait for the fog to lift.. I always wondered how he thought I got on the lake ,not knowing it was PK...

It almost happened to me on Ray Hubbard years ago. I would have been completely turned around as even the waves were confused and kept changing direction in the downpour. My little 1/2" compass on my watch band kept me traveling in more or less a straight line and saved the day. Advice: stow even the cheapest plastic compass somewhere on your boat for just this type of situation.

Good post. Bet most folks never even thought about this possibility on Texas lakes but it does happen.

Happened to me on Murvaul somewhere around 30 years ago. I put in with a fog giving little visiblity but knew that it was so bad that nobody was going to be running in that mess. I idled out across the lake, occasionally checking behind the boat looking at my wake to make sure I was going in a straight line.
Seemed like 20 minutes later I started hearing voices ahead and started heading towards them. Came into the same ramp I had left from. OOPs.

Happened to me this year on Tawakoni. Launched at the state park and navigated via GPS to finger point to wait for the fog to lift. Couple hours later I thought the fog had lifted enough to make it to the dam. Headed east from finger and it was'nt long till I lost all sight of land. Checked the GPS and it was off - dead battery, so I could not even see my trail. I finally figured out where I was about 20 minutes later - Sun Point. Not sure how I missed the trees. Very weird feeling - and I will not get caught like that again.

A friend of mine spent the night on Lavon when fog rolled in. He got turned around and wound up spitting mud with his prop when he went into the wrong cove and nearly beached his boat. He stuck a rod over the side of the boat and it went down less than two feet! He had no choice but to stay put until daylight so he could see where he was and then go from there. Worst part of it.....his wife was with him!

Never trust your wake to point you in a straight line.
Tried it once in the fog on a real small lake, finally convinced the boater this was a bad idea when the ramp we launched from came into sight...LOL.
Broke out the compass (this was waaaay before GPS) and found the point we were looking for pretty much on the first try.

I'd never been lost in fog until earlier this year. It hit about 10 AM when I was on Lake Conroe and already across the lake and fishing. I was trying to run about 600 yards or so across one little inlet and got out away from the bank and couldn't see either side. I was afraid of getting stuck in the middle and REALLY lost. Luckily I remembered which direction the wind was blowing...and remembered it was blowing straight to where I had just left, so I ended up right back where I was.
