By the way, DFI oil was not even available till several years after they started making the Optimax. Also.... MERCURY DFI OIL IS NOT TCW3 RATED.
Yeah they came out with it after those engines earned the nickname Opti-Pop! I have a short story about the Optipop. Fishing the BASS Central Div in 2001, Mercury had just had their new 225s out for a couple months and were having problems with them. They sent a trailer full of new powerheads to the tournament and in practice they had many who needed new motors. They could take a boat in and have it back out in 45 minutes. I don't remember anymore how many but it was over a dozen motors. I had a 200 and they said they weren't seeing problems with them. They found out the problem and it had nothing to do with oil. The air injectors if I remember right.

When my powerhead went out Chuck at service told me if you weren't using Premium Plus in a 225 or 250 that the warranty was void. That's what he sells and I believe he and Perry are the experts so I use Premium Plus. Warranty is not void as long as you were using other TC-W3 approved or merc/quicksilver DFI.

It’s amazing to me that guys will invest tens of thousands of dollars in a boat and motor and then cut a corner to save a few dollars on something like oil. Why? It’s penny wise and pound foolish.
The people that made your motor are explicitly telling you what they recommend and what they think is best for your motor. Seems like you’d simply do what they say.
But I also know a lot of folks who will go to a doctor (who went to school and trained his whole life in order to best help you) and then the person says the doctor doesn’t know what they are doing and they know better.
Ok. Wisdom!

We have our Optimax/DFI oil still at $26.00 a gallon. No need to bring in your containers!

I'd say if an engine can't hold up on a great premium plus oil then it's a piece of s***. Is this what you get for all that money? You should be pissed. Fortunately the fact is though, it will be fine. It's just Mercury selling product.
Because Mercury manufactures engines it creates a strong marketing(fear) tactic for selling oil also. Every oil company would love for you to buy their special blend, but they don't have an engine to hold over your head.

I've gotten it from them in the past. It's DFI oil, brown in color and a very distinctive smell.

Some homework on history of the Optimax you'll find they had a troubled early days, a 2005 optimax might look the same as a 2015 but in later years the engines were much more reliable.
