Lip, I can tell you the best color jigs we've found are blk/chrt, blk/pink, and solid chart.

Sandwich,Thanks a bunch.
Are you jigging those vertical directly on the stickups or casting and slow rolling them.

Mark all you want. Just get out on the water and jig around any stick out of the water and you'll probably find the Crappie.

Jigging right down in the brush. The fish I'm catching are buried up in the thickest brush you can find.

You will catch crappie if you will do as the master does.
Just watch and learn. LOL

I was just looking at the forcast for Saturday and it isn't looking too good. I love the rain for the lake levels, but I'm sick of it ruining our weekend angling!

Hey Sinkher,
I tell you what I will bring my castnet in case you get tired of watching me catch fish. LOL

Went yesterday to scout out a few bass. Man did the wind kick up. Caught zero bass but did have a few crappie it felt like tap at the small finessee bait I was using, but coulda been perch. All the bites came from heavy stickups around the island. Never did find any bass. I did see a crappie right on top of the water at the south end of the dam in those flooded green willow trees. That crappie was suspended right in the top of a tumble weed and could just see his top fin and little of his back. If he'd been down two inches would have never saw him because of the muddy water. It seemed like it was stirred up worse than I have ever seen it.

Hey Sandwich maker you remember Gorden Stokes? He and I have been visiting by emails some. He found me on the bass forum. Talked also to Lynn Fuller the other day by phone. I told him about all us old farts fishing but he is into golf. Noticed that Ben Zapata name came up earlier. Man just like a reunion in here...

Sorry it took so long, but here it goes:

Sandwich Maker (Tony is it?), Ben Zapata is actually a funeral home director here in Lamesa (from Lieutenant to mortician). We've only recently become friends, but my wife and his wife went to school together there in Snyder. He's a great guy and loves to fish almost as much as I do.
Can you get a vehicle out to Rocky Point yet without driving through twenty feet of red clay water yet? I was thinking about going out to Thomas next Tuesday or Thursday, but if we get the kind of rain the weather man is predicting, I may be wasting my time.

I assume the water temp will keep the crappie shallow for a little longer this year than is previous years. As far as the rocks go, I've actually had my best luck from the end of May through mid to late June. I remember being out there several years ago in early June with my brother, and we literally caught crappie for 5 hours almost non-stop casting Roadrunners on a shallow point. I continue to hope for another day like that, but I've come up empty so far.

I hope to get Ben out to Stamford or Phantom Hill this winter and put him on a more consistent bite. Anyway, if you see a guy fishing from a blue, U-shaped tube at Thomas sometime, stop by and say hi (name is Chris- was a manager a United Supermarkets in Lamesa for two years). I always have a good time sharing stories with TFF members. Good fishin' everyone.

Chris, There are still some really big crappie in 4'-5'. I haven't driven out to Rocky, so I don't know how the roads are. You can get to the warden's cove, though. Sparse brush on the east (ramp) side showing, but it's holding fish. More brush on the west side if you want to kick over there. I haven't caught a limit since the last rise, but the fish I'm on are big. The smaller fish are in closer to the bank.

Good luck and tell Ben I said Hi. Tell him Foree retired and bought a place out at Thomas.

Moer rain on the way. Good for the lake level, but bad for the fishing. Monday is looking pretty good.

Sandwich, I don't mind kicking. One day three years ago, I parked at Rocky Point, kicked around the big island, worked the big creek next to Rocky Point (south of the small island), and then I worked all of warden's cove. I was dead tired and only managed a few small crappie and one 10 lb. largemouth. To make matters worse, the wind picked up out of the west at 20-30 mph with higher gusts and I thought I would never get back to my car. Luckily a gentleman saw me struggling in the water so he gave me a ride to my car. I will give all of those sticks a try either Tuesday or Thursday next week and hopefully I can put Ben back on the fish. I'll be sure to tell Ben you said hi and also tell him about Foree. Good fishin'.

Slabbed, Buddy of mine got a 2-12 and a 2-10 Friday. In "blind" brush, it's nearly all covered up with the new water. Both males. He only caught 11 crappie, but they were nice ones. The east side of Rocky is lined with brush that goes around the corner and into the feeder creek that runs west. Some big fish in there, crappie and bass, so hold on.

Bassin, I remember Gordon. Lynn is married to a girl I grew up with. Last saw him years ago when he and Sherry came to a class reunion. (Class of 69)
