J-Moe and I hiked down the Yegua from Irwin bridge to walk off the extra holiday pounds and to see if we might get lucky and find some fish. Finding fish proved difficult under the beautiful clear blue skies and that winter green water of the Yegua. Not to be defeated we then jumped over to Nails creek walking in from the WMA to find a few cooperative bass to take my spinnerbait.

Late 2016 was the best.. This was after the lake had been lowered to near normal level after the second record flooding when it went over the emergency spillway around Memorial Day 2015 & 2016.

As always, great video Ben. Kudos to you for out fishing J-Moe.

Does anybody have any info on targeting catfish up there? I don't really want to be paddling out in the middle of the lake. Maybe below the spillway or in one of the creeks? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Catfishing in the Yegua (lower end) is probably as good as any place on the lake.. and it's pretty good up Nails creek too. Jug lines and limb line are very effective as is rod and reel. The locals do it all the time..

Praying for some good rain to hit the Yegua creek so the white bass can make their run up the creek. I am ready to make the long drive from Leander to catch some fish. When the run is on it is MY Most Wonderful Time of the Year!!

Duck season is coming to a close and it's time to start fishing. Anyone wanting to make some trips up the Yegua or Nails hit me up. I'll start booking trips soon. Licensed guide, USCG qualified captain. Ran up the creeks the other day and the water was looking good. Lake is about a foot below pool. Rains forecasted for the rest of the week with cold weather. We shall see what happens. The mouth of nails creek is silted up with only one small shallow inlet for access. Be mindful that duck season runs through the 26th and you will probably encounter hunters if you come out before 9-10am. Looking forward to a good start to a new year. Tight lines everyone!

If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.

In a world of compromise.....Some don't.

Come on rain. 2 to 4 foot rise in the creak would be great.

I checked on the creeks this morning. The Somerville area only received about 0.75 inches of rain.

Nails and Cedar had very little additional water or flow. The Yegua is up a few inches and has slightly more flow. There is a glimmer of hope though as it normally takes up to 24 hours before the watershed drains down to Irwin Bridge. Newman Bottom is still closed. It may be worth going up the mouth of the Yegua tomorrow. It might be enough flow to move a few of those harmone crazed small males into Yegua creek.

I walked down below the parking lot at Irwin bridge. There was a healthy looking tree that had been pushed over and lots of branches off healthy looking trees on the ground.

Thanks for the update, J-Moe. I was hoping for better results from this latest storm.

Wise choice, greenyak. Wind was crazy today.

I've been working with what's left of the old Nails Creek Park friends group and the park directors to restart the group to better support the park.
We (friends group) have some legal work to do and to amend some of the bylaws to reflect that our efforts will be for the whole Lake Somerville State Park complex and not just Nails Creek unit as in the past.

TPWD and the park staff have made great progress in getting the park back in working order after several high water events and are hoping to get more of the trailway and Newman's Bottom open in time for the whitebass run.

When I get the go-ahead from the park I would like to have another creek fishing clinic at the Nails Creek Unit pavilion (next to the boat ramp). I've put three of these clinics on in the past and they are a great opportunity to meet and greet with a lot of TFFers and learn from the best creek fishers known to mankind wink

One way or another I am going to do the clinic even if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate very well and bring up the fish..
Each of you have much to share with your fellow fishermen & women so don't be shy.
