I was planning on retiring next year, but my bills said "NO, YOU ARE NOT, NOW GET BACK TO WORK" ..... so here I am at work looking for a lot on Lake Palestine I can retire to in 3-4 years. I don't know why I want to retire on that catfish infested sucker when crappie are my favorite .... went crappie fishing last Friday and caught catfish from 3' to 30' water in 90 MPH winds!

Just the thought of being there every day when there is no wind and no one else on the lake is enough to consume me some days at work. I know that's kind of shallow, but heck I cant hardly wait. I do look forward to it. It's not to keep them all,. Its just to get out there and find them in peace. And to do it with no wake boats around.
If you are wanting no one on the lake, Lewisville is not your lake. There are always people on that lake and Grapevine.

One bit of advice for retirement....make sure you have good medical insurance or wait until you can get on medicare. Other than that, retirement is fantastic.
To whom much is given, much is required.

True, there is almost always a crowd any day in the summer and on weekends the rest of the year. But, to get out there at a off time is quite a pleasure after this past summer. Currently looking hard at Tyler/ Palestine. Area. Great fishing with still a lot of the services available in DFW. Lots of friendly folks out there as well

I have joined the "retirement club" as of this past Monday! It seemed like I was always at work when the fish were biting good and the wind was favorable. Now, I won't have to miss any of those days!!! I love fishing during the week!!!

Palestine is a very good crappie lake. Hire a guide to cut the learning curve down. I have been fishing it for years, and have a couple very good spots .... just wanted to rant about the slimy suckers infesting the lake! I caught 8 crappie over 16" in one hole on the same day. (a couple years ago, not last Friday) When a lake has a 50 fish per man and NO SIZE LIMIT .... should tell you right there it is infested! In the 70's they had the bright idea to raise the size limit on catfish and that is what caused it, I guarantee. In the 80's we would go for catfish, and a legal length keeper looked like an eel ... they messed my lake up!!!!!

Bush Hog: Medical insurance is a potential show stopper for sure. My Blue Cross plan I originally had that was $150 a month went to over $800 after The "affordable" care act passed. Luckily for me I'm Christian and could use medishare. My premium is double now at $300, but it's better than the Blue Cross deal. https://mychristiancare.org/medi-share/Retirement planning all goes away if politicians try to help...

Funny you should mention Medicare bush hog. When I finally got to get coverage it seamed so cheap, then you realize you have been paying for it since you first went to work. It shouldn't cost anything. They still take it out of your check with a monthly premium to boot.

About two years ago, my wife and I totally rearranged our lives in order to be able to live full time on a lake and have our own boat dock. We saw friends and family getting sick/disabled and/or passing away and decided that "someday" might never come. We can't retire yet, but the kids are grown up and have their own families. We sold the big custom home and bought a smaller 1970's house in a good neighborhood with 80' of waterfront. By choosing school districts carefully, our property taxes dropped in half. Additional lowering of our personal overhead included getting rid of toys that had payments and driving slightly older car and truck. Our boat is now an older, used pontoon, paid for with one year's worth of property tax savings. All told, we ended up cutting our personal overhead by 58% - to live a more relaxed lifestyle. Sure, we gave up a lot of niceties, but it only takes 90 seconds to lower our pontoon boat into the water - it's like pulling a car out of garage. We go out several times per week to drop a line in the water, enjoy the sunrises and sunsets - with appropriate beverages. Even Dec-Feb have several warmer clear and sunny days, so we boat year around. Sorry we didn't do it sooner, but I had convinced myself that I just HAD to have all the stuff, and do all of the stuff that we did. ![[Linked Image]](http://marckurth.com/lakeweather/July4thvacationW.jpg)

Mark on CC. That sounds like the perfect life to me. So looking forward to it. I actually enjoy what I do, but I want to only do it so long.
