Fishing should be fine. Think small, real small like #20 would be big bug.

My favorite time on the Juan is November through March. Some of the biggest fish are caught in that time frame. Some epic midge hatches on cloudy days fishing clusters. Also streamer fishing is great so it's not always size 20's. I firmly believe you have to get outside the box sometimes on the Juan.
Give me a PM if you want to visit about that time of year.

It's been an odd year for flows on the Juan, apparently because they've been releasing to help some endangered fish downstream. Just a week ago, the flows were like 1200 cfs, which for me, is too high for DIY wading, and so my buddy and I moved our yearly trip to the South Platte area, and sure enough, they surprised us by dropping to 600 cfs which wades fine...oh well. I fish 24-26s, but like 4wt says above, you have to ply some streamers. My favorite is a simple, olive marabou leech, that I'll drift with a midge trailer, then strip in fast on the retrieve. You have to use at least 8 lb. test when stripping leeches or they will bust you off on the take. The theory is the olive marabou looks like moss that's broken loose with a bunch of midges riding along. I will probably head out there this winter or early spring.

Kaboboom Solid info. The high water this year was based on the 300% snowpack this year instead of the 70% last year. Inflows to Navajo in May were like 8000cfs when the release was like 800. They did a peak release to 5K for about 7-8 days but never moved the table. It’s all good man. When you go into October at 600 cfs versus the normal 250-300 it’s a welcome change. Go to the Juan now before it drops.

There will be several of us there Oct 31-Nov 3. Flows 400-600 are perfect. Agree with all said above - 20-26 midges in the slower water and eddies, black and olive streamers in faster water or around structure. We especially like a moss rig trailed by tiny midges in back eddies.

Leech to the larvae is always a good rig at dusk. Love a red larvae below the leech. 3X minimum to the Leech as they will hammer it on the twitch. They will snap 4X. You are " matching the moss " with your leech as there are big time moss eaters on the Juan. Check out the color of the moss floating from waders upstream and match the color of your leech to that moss. You will catch them and pose for a pic and they will be pooping moss. Lots of larvae to eat in that moss.
Don't forget white streamers this time of year. I could tell you why but I won't, just trust me on white.
