Today's electronics take all the guess work (fun) out of fishing and the sad thing is if you want to compete you have to have them.
I would love to compete in a series that denies the use of today's electronics and equipment and you have to compete like we did 20 years ago. If you wanted to fish the wind then you stood on the trolling motor not spot lock. If you had brush piles out in open water then you had landmarks not waypoints. Sad, Sad, Sad.

Do you cry out loud at a stop light every time there is someone pulling away in a NEWer truck with one of them new fangled not needed automatic transmissions and power windows?

You guys that want to compete “old school” come to caddo lake and enter a tournament. Electronics won’t help you and you can see how you fair against other “old school” anglers.

You ever heard the term smoke them if you got them? Makes since to me to use whatever you can at that level or even everyday fishing. I’d rather know I’m making a cast around fish that I have to make bite. Haters are going to hate, but why wouldn’t you use the technology offered?

I think there might have been 2-3 of the competitors that had ever been on Lake Tenkiller. Most had never heard of it. They had 3 days of practice on a lake that NOBODY tournament fishes during the day in the summertime, under extreme falling water conditions. I know every inch of it and I don't think I could catch 6 pounds a day out there with or without electronics under the conditions they were fishing. If he had beaten the banks for 4 days like most of the others did, he would be $100,000 poorer and without his first win.

Did he simply not know where to fish or quit fishing altogether?

Some of you guys are awfully defensive about your electronics. The OP posted a good topic for discussion, no need in insulting him or anyone else that may have commented just because you don’t share their view. This is a fishing forum guys, we talk about stuff, if you don’t like a topic don’t post... pretty simple.

I was having a similar discussion yesterday with a couple of buddies while fishing Ray Bob, not about Carl but just that fishermen without all the current advanced electronics are at a major dis advantage when it comes to structure fishing. We did it old school yesterday, idled over the brushpiles and dropped a marker buoy.. and caught fish!

This thread is funny. How the hell are you going to be critical of someone who won an Elite event and openly discussed how 360 imaging helped him win?? That lake was fishing terribly. Did you see the weights? I'd imagine that the majority of the field was using Panoptix/360 just to get a couple bites. Who Cares? Is that going to affect your success on tour?? roflmao roflmao

Carl is a great guy. I love his story and his passion. Lots of ways to be successful bass fishing. My guess is he would be the first to tell you that. Sure helps to be a master of your electronics, but I know guys who are very successful that use very little of the technology available today. As much pressure as there is on lakes these days......if we all fished the same, there would be weekly stories of bass fishermen killing each other on local lakes.

Some scout for months on a property looking for trophy buck patterns , stalk them with a bow, sit on a trail without bait, sit for hours in a tree stand and the have to pay attention to the slightest wind shifts, and maybe go a couple years without taking a shot. Some throw corn and feed protein to create a Starbucks safe space, ride a 4 wheeler close to their stand, sit out 125 yds in a box with a heater, a scoped rifle on a tripod, drinking coffee while they snappy chatty with their friends.

I couldn't care less. God bless America.

Do you need to have that type of equipment if you want to make a living in the Elite Series? Possibly. Do you need to have that kind of technology when competing in tournaments like Champs, TTT or any other smaller weekend trails? Absolutely not. Some people need the extra help to find and catch fish. Some don't. Most people who have all that stuff who aren't making a living fishing have it because they can afford it. It would be asinine to think you are a better fisherman than someone because you have it, and ridiculous to think you can't compete if you don't.
