What are you trying to protect?

Inside? Outside?

How paranoid are you?

You need to increase your paranoia. I suggest frequent trips to the Bunker.

Ring Alarm and then you can add Ring security cameras, including indoor, outdoor, and video doorbell cameras.

Same here. You also get an audible alarm on the base station that you can set off from your phone. Scared the poop out of my wife with that particular feature.

I have been using a Swann system for 8 years and they're great. I have 2 in front and 3 in back. You can buy straight from them and cut out the middle man. Here's an example that might work for you. All you'll need to add is a monitor.

4 Camera 8 Channel 1080p Full HD DVR Security System

SWDVK-845804WL

DVR-4580 with 1TB HDD & 4 x 1080p Heat & Motion Sensing Warning Light Security Cameras PRO-1080MSFB
$279.99
Check out their website for many more options.

Back around 2015, this system had a visual delay of 20 plus seconds. Wasn't real time. Has it improved?

Yes. Mine is less than 1/2 second delay. It may depend on your wifi.

4 Camera 8 Channel 1080p Full HD DVR Security System - WiFi. Have had mine for several years and very pleased. Cheaper to purchase on eBay. It has audio also and easy to view on cell phone. It is user friendly. Tech support is great also.

I've had Swann for 6 or 7 years now and it still works well. 1080P, great night vision range with the IR illuminators. All the doors of the house covered and into the street in front. There is an inherent issue with most cameras and that is the field of view, and focal length. Most of them are wide view and infinity focus and serve the purpose for the most part. So I can see cars clearly in front of and behind the house in the alley. What I can't see even when zooming in are license plate numbers. This is probably worthless info for you but if you want to identify license plates you need to get special focus license plate reading cameras. Just a note.

I have the Arlo system as well. I'm generally pretty happy except for the fact one of my cameras does not seem to record at night. I'm assuming it's a minor glitch I just need to work through. Otherwise it's reasonably priced and works well.

My neighbor is a county deputy. He put one up when he moved in. I think he said it was an Amazon Blink. I figured he had seen lots of home security cameras and would know the best system to use.
