Gear lube changed every year, water pump every other, tune up depends on useage. Also a quality additive in the gas

'99 Merc 225 EFI - I change impeller and gear oil every year. On the impeller, one year, just the impeller, next year, full kit. I also use marine stabil and QuickKleen in every tank. Lastly, I change the fuel/water separator once per year. I have had to replace lower unit seals twice over 20 years as I found the oil gear oil milky.

I didn’t think running ethanol gas was that bad until I changed fuel filter and cleaned the high and low pressure fuel pumps. It looked like someone chewed up a tootsie roll and spit it in the bottom of the fuel pump housing. I will be buying ethanol free from now on.

Fogging oil isn't a bad idea either on a two stroke for long term storage

If you are keeping your boat outside during the winter. Tilt your motor down and let the water drain out. I had a small outboard that cracked due to the water/ice trapped in the lower unit.
